Problem 1: Galaxy Note8 notifications for multiple apps won't go away
For the past 2 days my phone will show that I have a new message in my message+ app, Facebook app, Snapchat app, Instagram app, and my Facebook messenger app, but there is nothing there. The notifications won't go away for about an hour, or until I restart my phone a couple of times. I will also clear them out of my notification bar at the top of my screen, then they come right back like I have a new notification. And now when ever i send a text message in my message+ app, it says sending under my message even though it has been delivered. How do i fix these problems??? — Crystal
Solution: Hi Crystal. This issue can be the result of the presence of a software bug or a bad third party app. To fix it, make sure that you do our suggestions below.
Solution #1: Clear data of BadgeProvider app
BadgeProvider app is one of core Android apps that's involved in notifications for almost everything. It's responsible for allowing notifications for apps and services like missed call alerts, new incoming texts, among others. If BadgeProvider does not work properly, notifications may work erratically. In some cases, this is manifested by lack of notifications at all. Commonly though, notifications may show all the time, even after a user has viewed them. To check if your issue is due to malfunctioning BadgeProvider app, make sure that you wipe its data. Here's how:
- Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
- Navigate down to "Apps."
- Tap More settings at the upper right side (three-dot icon).
- Tap Show system apps.
- Find BadgeProvider app and tap it.
- You'll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You'll want to click on Storage.
- Tap Clear Data buttons for the application.
- Restart your Note8 and check if the issue remains.
Solution #2: Clear cache and data of other apps
Should persistent notifications continue to be displayed after you wiped the data of BadgeProvider app, the next thing to do is to deal with the problematic apps directly. Make sure that you wipe the cache and data of these apps:
- Message+
- Snapchat
- Facebook Messenger
Try wiping each of their cache first. If that won't work, then delete their data as well.
Wiping the data of the Message+ app may delete your SMS so be sure to back them up before you proceed.
Here are the steps to clear an app's cache and data:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap More settings at the upper right (three-dot icon).
- Select Show system apps.
- Find the app you're having an issue with.
- Tap Storage app.
- Tap Clear Cache button.
- Restart your device and observe how playing a video works on any or all of these apps.
If the problem returns after clearing the cache, your next move would be to clear its data.
To clear a messaging app's data, repeat steps 1-4 and tap Clear Data button.
Solution #3: Install app and Android updates
Sometimes, minor bugs that show all of a sudden are due to coding inefficiencies in the operating system and they are only fixed by installing updates that includes patches. In order to minimize bugs, be sure not to skip app and Android updates. Regularly check the Play Store for app updates and System > Software updates for Android updates.
Solution #4: Delete the cache partition
Some bugs are caused by corrupted system cache so if you the suggestions above has not fixed the issue at this stage, be sure to clear the cache partition. Doing so will delete the current system cache. Don't worry as your Note8 will just rebuild this cache over time. Wiping the cache partition won't delete your personal data so there's no need to worry about losing files either.
To clear your Note8 cache partition:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys ('Installing system update' will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight 'wipe cache partition'.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until 'yes' is highlighted and press the Power button.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, "Reboot system now" is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
- After your Note8 restarts, check for the issue again.
Solution #5: Factory reset
Factory reset should already be performed if the problem remains even up to this point. Wiping your phone means that the operating system settings will all be returned to their factory state. It also will delete your files so be sure to back them up ahead of time.
To factory reset your Note8:
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.Tap Settings > Cloud and accounts.
- Tap Accounts.
- Tap Google.
- Tap on your Google ID email address if multiple accounts are setup. If you have multiple accounts setup, you will need to repeat these steps for each account.
- Tap 3 dot icon.
- Tap Remove account.
- Tap REMOVE ACCOUNT.
Once you're ready to reset your phone, follow these steps to bring your phone back to default settings…
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys ('Installing system update' will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight "wipe data / factory reset.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until 'Yes — delete all user data' is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, "Reboot system now" is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Problem 2: Read Galaxy Note8 emails show read status on PC
I have a Note 8 and ever since I have loaded my business email account on my phone, my notification highlight for my email on my desk top, has shown every email read. On my Note 3 which I had previously did not do that to my email on my desktop. I mainly work from my desktop so it is annoying when every email is shown as read. I can't sort out what needs taken care of. I hope that I've explained properly. — Kathy Barnett
Solution: Hi Kathy. If you set your email accounts on both your Note8 and computer to use IMAP, actions from one device will usually be mirrored to the other. For instance, if you read emails on your Note8 first, this same message will usually be also shown as read when you access it on your computer. That's because email clients are usually designed to inform email servers regarding certain tasks that you've done on your messages. Some email providers may also set their service to do the same behavior so there are two possible reasons why you have this situation right now. As far as settings on stock Samsung email client on the Note8 is concerned, there's no option that you can change to let what you want happen. To see if it's something that your email service provider can change, we suggest that you contact them and let them know what you want. Your business account may have an option to keep messages remain unread even if you've already accessed them on another device.
