Latest Galaxy S10 update seems to have improved battery life

Image
Despite featuring a 4,000 mAh battery like the Galaxy Note 9, the Galaxy S10+ hasn't been as efficient as we would have hoped. Everyone at SamMobile has an Exynos variant of the S10+, and while battery life has been dependable, we've found it to be more power hungry than the Note 9 . But it looks like Galaxy S10 battery life has gotten a boost with the April security update . As the only one on the SamMobile team to be using the Galaxy S10+ with two SIM cards, I've had poorer battery life than my colleagues. But I'm now getting five hours of screen time on a regular basis with at least 16 hours of total usage time, even with a few hours on LTE data outside the house. Until a week or so ago, getting five hours of screen time meant seeing no more than 15 hours of total usage time. I also never saw the phone reaching six hours of screen time, but it is now crossing the six-hour barrier regularly as long as I'm on a Wi-Fi connection the entire day. Battery killing

Samsung Galaxy Fold ‘review’: The future is (almost) here

Image
Where Apple decided to use the tenth anniversary of the iPhone to finally bring the device up to par with the competition (adding an AMOLED display and reducing the atrociously large bezels the iPhone had always had before the iPhone X), Samsung went on a different tangent altogether. The Galaxy S10 is an impressive flagship and a substantial upgrade from its predecessor, but Samsung had something more exciting to show off. Yes, Samsung took the wraps off the Galaxy Fold, the foldable smartphone it has been working on for almost five years. As a Samsung fan site, it would be an understatement to say everyone here at SamMobile was excited, primarily because someone was finally addressing the lack of innovation in the smartphone industry and Samsung itself was getting back in form . And, well, because the Korean giant's foldable phone was  finally  here after years of rumors. Sadly, it's been a rough few days for the Galaxy Fold, with reports of the screen breaking for some

Galaxy A30 now receiving its second update of the month

Image
Samsung has started rolling out its second update of the month for the two-month-old Galaxy A30 . The release bundles a number of improvements for core system functions, including GPS. It also carries a handful of changes that are said to ameliorate the stability of audio playback and the handset's proximity sensor, according to the changelog — though it's unclear how exactly it does that. The last update Samsung circulated for the Galaxy A30, which began making the rounds at the start of the month, transported all of the patches baked into this month's security release ; addressing five critical and dozens of high-risk vulnerabilities in the Android OS, as well as 15 that are exclusive to Samsung's firmware. It also bundles a fix for a bug that hindered earphone performance. All of those changes have been ported over to this latest update, so those who missed out on the last one shouldn't fret about installing it first, before the most recent one. In fact, the

Samsung pours $2.9 million into crypto wallet startup Ledger

Image
Earlier this week we heard that Samsung is mulling over a move into the cryptocurrency market with the introduction of its own token, and now it's been revealed that the firm has poured $2.9 million into French hardware wallet manufacturer Ledger — adding some substance to the broad claim. While Ledger confirmed the investment, it refrained from providing additional details about the deal itself. We can't help but think that Samsung could be using the funding as a chance to dip its toe in the water and grasp a clear understanding of the hardware ledger market, before launching its own. Samsung launched a software ledger alongside the Galaxy S10 back in February. What's strange, however, is that it can only be used with Ethereum and Ethereum-derived tokens. Or is it? Ever since it emerged that Samsung Coin would be based on Ethereum, the move has made a lot more sense. Samsung Coin? What's a Samsung Coin? Little is known about the token Samsung is working on,

The Death of External Storage: Serenity Now

Image
In a rare bit of good news, it appears that Google will apply normal targetSdkVersion rules to the new "scoped storage" in Android Q . It appears that apps that have targetSdkVersion of 28 or lower will not be affected by the external storage restrictions that exist on Android Q. Previously, such apps would be affected if they were newly installed on Android Q devices. Such apps will have some type of manifest entry to opt into scoped storage, or they will be affected once their targetSdkVersion reaches 29 Q . This is huge, for two reasons. First, as Google points out, this gives active developers more time to update their apps to deal with these changes. Second, this will allow legacy apps — those not receiving updates — to continue working as normal… at least for a while. Google is threatening that all apps will need to use scoped storage on Android R, along the lines of what was threatened with this release. Frankly, unless Google fixes things, that's ridic

Android Q Scoped Storage: Best Practices and Updates

Image
Posted by Jeff Sharkey, Software Engineer, and Seb Grubb, Product Manager Application Sandboxing is a core part of Android's design, isolating apps from each other. In Android Q, taking the same fundamental principle from Application Sandboxing, we introduced Scoped Storage . Since the Beta 1 release , you've given us a lot of valuable feedback on these changes -- thank you for helping shape Android! Because of your feedback, we've evolved the feature during the course of Android Q Beta. In this post, we'll share options for declaring your app's support for Scoped Storage on Android Q devices, and best practices for questions we've heard from the community. Updates to help you adopt Scoped Storage We expect that Scoped Storage should have minimal impact to apps following current storage best practices . However, we also heard from you that Scoped Storage can be an elaborate change for some apps and you could use more time to assess the impact. Being d
