Samsung bets on 5G to improve its fortunes in 2020

Image
Samsung was among the few companies that launched 5G smartphones in 2019. It ended up shipping 6.7 million 5G phones last year even though there were only a handful of 5G-compatible models in its entire lineup. The company sees great potential for growth in 5G and it's counting on that to improve its fortunes this year. Samsung is in the unique position of benefiting both from the widespread consumer adoption of 5G smartphones and mobile carriers' shift to 5G networks as it also provides network solutions. 5G will be a key growth area for Samsung in 2020 Samsung pointed out in its Q4 2019 earnings release today that its revenues from the network business decreased compared to Q3 2019 because 5G adoption in South Korea was concentrated in the first half of the year. It was actually the first country to launch commercial 5G networks and Samsung's 5G equipment played a significant role in enabling local carriers to launch their next-gen networks. However, it did see

Galaxy S10 5G gets Android 10 update on T-Mobile

Image
The Galaxy S10 series was the first to get the Android 10 and One UI 2.0 update, but that doesn't mean the rollout has been completed for all variants by all carriers. Owners of the Galaxy S10 5G in particular have had to wait longer than those who own any of the standard Galaxy S10 models. For T-Mobile users, that wait is finally coming to an end. The un-carrier has released the Android 10 update for the Galaxy S10 5G this week. The update — software version  G977TUVU3BSL5 — was released on January 27 and should be available for all Galaxy S10 5G owners on T-Mobile by now. You can check if that's the case for your device from the  Settings » Software update  menu on the phone. You can also update your phone by flashing the full Android 10 firmware on it using a Windows PC. You can find that firmware in our firmware archive . The Android 10 update brings a number of new features , such as a choice of Google and Samsung navigation gestures, a native system-wide screen re

Rumor: Galaxy Z Flip will give you last year’s camera for 1500 euros

Image
It's been repeatedly mentioned in all the Galaxy Z Flip leaks that Samsung's new foldable phone will use the Snapdragon 855 processor from last year. The most recent leak suggests it will be the Snapdragon 855+, but the point remains: The Galaxy Z Flip will not have the latest and greatest internals. And while the Galaxy Z Flip is also expected to miss out on the 108MP camera that we will see on the Galaxy S20 Ultra, it did seem like it would have the upgraded 12MP main camera that the Galaxy S20 and S20+ will be equipped with. However, according to a Twitter leakster, that won't be the case and the Galaxy Z Flip will use the Dual Aperture 12MP camera that we saw on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 have an excellent primary rear shooter, one that has been in use since the Galaxy S9 came out. But if the Galaxy Z Flip does not have the new camera from the Galaxy S20 series, then that's anot

One way Samsung will benefit from being first to enter foldables market

Image
Samsung's launch of its first commercial foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold, was turbulent. The company overlooked an important aspect of the Fold's design and had to delay the device's release for nearly six months . Many believe the design oversight happened because Samsung simply wanted to be first with a foldable device on the market, and they have a point. But being first to market does have its benefits, as the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip will prove. If the rumors are to be believed (and at this point, they can be ), the Galaxy Z Flip's foldable screen will have an ultra-thin layer of glass on top. The other clamshell foldable phone that's launching this year, the Motorola Razr, won't. Just like Samsung, Motorola is making sure people know that the Razr will have to be handled with care . And while that is going to be general advice for any foldable phone in the first few years, Samsung does have an advantage here. Since Samsung has been working on foldable ph

Samsung hints at more foldable devices for 2020

Image
Samsung announced its quarterly results for the last three months of 2019 today, and in the report, the company has hinted that it will be launching multiple foldable smartphones in 2020. The Galaxy Z Flip will clearly be the first of them, and while Samsung doesn't go into any details, it is clearly suggesting that the Z Flip is not the only foldable phone it will bring to market this year. And that shouldn't come as a surprise. We already expect Samsung to release the successor to the Galaxy Fold in the second half of the year, though details on that device are pretty scarce at the moment. However, there have been reports that the Galaxy Fold 2 (or whatever Samsung calls it) will support the S Pen and have an 8-inch folding display. The foldable display will likely have ultra-thin glass on top , which would make S Pen support possible and also make the display less prone to damage compared to the Galaxy Fold's display. Other specs can be expected to be similar to wh

Samsung profits decline 53% in 2019, improvement likely this year

Image
The earnings estimate that Samsung released three weeks ago for the fourth quarter of last year showed that the company's 2019 full-year profit would decline a whopping 53 percent compared to 2018. That was confirmed today when Samsung published its full earnings report for Q4 2019 and the fiscal year 2019. Samsung reported revenues of 230.40 trillion won ($193.7 billion) in 2019 compared to 243.77 trillion won ($221.6 billion) in 2018. Its operating profits for the year 2019 total 27.77 trillion won ($23.2 billion), a steep 53 percent decline compared to the 58.89 trillion on ($50.4 billion) in profit that it earned in 2018. Total profit for 2019 is down 53 percent compared to 2018 Samsung's Q4 2019 earnings remained almost flat compared to Q4 2018 as the company posted revenues of 59.9 trillion won ($50.7 billion), just 1 percent above the same period last year. Its operating profit for Q4 2019 came in at 7.1 trillion won ($6 billion), a solid 34 percent slide compared

Samsung maintained crown of largest smartphone vendor in 2019

Image
2019 was a good year for Samsung, at least as far as ensuring it didn't see its smartphone sales go on a downward trajectory is concerned. According to the latest data from Strategy Analytics , Samsung maintained its status as the world's largest smartphone vendor in 2019. The company shipped 295.1 million phones over the entire year and claimed 20.9 percent market share. At the end of 2018, those figures stood at 291.3 million and 20.3 percent respectively. It was only in the fourth quarter that Samsung was overtaken by Apple, with the latter seeing strong iPhone 11 sales, especially in Asia and North America. Samsung's sales dipped by 1 percent in Q4 2019 compared to Q4 2018, though its market share during that period remained the same at 18 percent. Overall, Samsung was able to maintain its lead on the back of good performance across all price segments , although it's an entirely different story as far as its revenue and profits are concerned . February 2020 security patch released for the Galaxy Tab S3

Image
In 2019, Samsung often released new Android security patches for its devices earlier than everyone else, including Google, and it seems determined to keep doing it this year as well. In Korea, Samsung is pushing out an update to the Galaxy Tab S3 that bundles the February 2020 security patch, two days before February actually begins. The update comes with software version  T825N0KOU3CTA1 for the LTE model of the tablet; the software version suggests the update includes more than just enhanced security, but we're unable to say what that might be at this time. It probably doesn't bring any new features, as the Galaxy Tab S3 has been on the market for nearly three years. Even security updates do not come out for the tablet regularly, only when necessary . It remains to be seen if the February security patch will also be coming to the Galaxy Tab S3 in other markets soon, but for now, Korean users of the tablet can download the update over the air from the  Settings » Software

Stable Galaxy S9 Android 10 update rolling out to beta users

Image
The Galaxy S9 and S9+ Android 10 beta program has finally ended. Samsung is rolling out the final Android 10 build to those who participated in the beta program. The update that has been released for beta users has the same firmware version as the update that rolled out to Android Pie users earlier this week – G96*FXXU7DTAA. We can confirm that the update is rolling out in India, but it should also be available in other countries where Samsung carried out beta tests, such as the UK and South Korea. In India, those who weren't part of the beta program can now download the Android 10 update as well. The update comes with the January 2020 security patch, which was also released as part of a regular security update in some markets earlier this month. With both Android 10 beta and Android Pie users now getting Android 10 on their Galaxy S9 and S9+, all of Samsung's eligible flagship smartphones have been updated to the latest version of Android and One UI. Naturally, it will

Space out with Google Earth on mobile

Image
Stars are magical. Van Gogh painted them. Shakespeare wrote about them. We make wishes on them.  On the Google Earth team, we understand people's desire to see stars just as much as they want to see Planet Earth. The Google Earth mobile app now offers wide views of our starry universe, just as Earth for the web and Earth Pro have done for some time. As smartphones and tablets have become more powerful, we've been able to bring the quality of Earth's web and Pro versions to most smartphones. You can now see a view of the stars as you zoom out from Earth on your phone. Rotate the globe and you'll see images of the beautiful Milky Way, collected from the European Southern Observatory, depicting the stars as they'd appear to a space explorer at a point some 30,000 miles above the planet.  Before we added the star imagery, the sky around the "big blue marble" view in Google Earth was simply black, which wasn't very realis

Can your smart thermostat be smarter?

Image
As a lifelong thermostat-turner-upper, I distinctly remember a day in high school when I made a beeline to crank the heat in my family home. Instead of the quiet rumble of the heater turning on, it was silent. I bundled myself in blankets and waited to tell my parents the news: We were going to freeze. Clearly I was being dramatic, but I remember my parents' frustration nonetheless with the broken furnace.  Not to date myself, but this was before smart thermostats existed. Our thermostat wasn't tracking any minor issues that could become big ones, and it certainly couldn't alert us about them. Fortunately, homes are getting smarter: Starting today we are testing a new Nest thermostat feature that can help alert you to some heating and cooling system (HVAC) issues. With this new feature, Nest is learning how to identify unusual patterns related to your HVAC system, and can alert you to a variety of potential issues. Most of us don't have an HVAC pro on speed dia

"Heritage on the Edge” urges action on the climate crisis

Image
Editor's note: Guest author Dr. Toshiyuki Kono is President of the International Council on Monuments and Sites. Distinguished Professor Kono also teaches private international law and heritage law at Japan's Kyushu University. Preserving and protecting the past is essential for our future. This belief is at the core of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), a global non-government organization dedicated to the conservation of architectural and archaeological heritage. Our 10,000 members across the globe—including architects, archeologists, geographers, planners and anthropologists—share the same vision: to protect and promote the world's cultural heritage. The recent youth climate demonstrations shed a spotlight on the urgency of the climate crisis, which is having a devastating effect on our cultural monuments too. It is important to take action, and we must act now to save this part of our human legacy. That's why, in collaborati

Samsung confirms Galaxy Tab S6 5G release for January 30

Image
It was first revealed in October last year that Samsung might soon launch a 5G variant of its flagship Galaxy Tab S6 tablet . The company later quietly confirmed on its own website that a 5G variant of the tablet is indeed going to be offered in the near future . Samsung today confirmed that it's going to release the Galaxy Tab S6 5G on January 30. South Korea will be the first and only market to get it at this point in time. Galaxy Tab S6 5G is the world's first 5G tablet The Galaxy Tab S6 5G has the distinction of being the world's first 5G tablet. It's almost identical to the Wi-Fi and LTE variant in specs with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem being an obvious exception. It keeps the same 10.5-inch Super AMOLED display and Snapdragon 855 processor with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage being the only configuration offered. Its other specs include a 13-megapixel wide and 5-megapixel ultra-wide dual rear camera setup and an 8-megapixel front camera. The 7,040mAh ba

Rethinking Payment Request for iOS Chrome

Image
The Payment Request API is a web standard to make it easier for web developers to build low-friction and secure payment flows. The browser facilitates the flow between a merchant website and "payment handlers". A payment handler can be built-in to the browser, a native app installed on the user's mobile device, or a Progressive Web App . Today, developers can use the Payment Request API to access several payment methods, including " basic-card " in Chrome on all platforms, Google Pay in Chrome on Android, and Apple Pay in Safari. The Chrome team continues to work with other browser vendors and digital wallet developers to make more payment handlers available with this new standard. Shipping the Payment Request API over the last two years helped us better understand the challenges in building payment flows on the web. We learned that UX is critical for building user trust with a payment app, and new technology such as tokenization has made great strides

Get creative with Tangi, Area 120’s latest experiment

Image
Last time I went home to see my parents in Shanghai, I found them watching lots of how-to videos on painting and photography on their phone—even though I had considered them to be "smartphone challenged." My mom has always had a creative side, and I was surprised to learn that she's now an amateur oil painter thanks to these niche communities with quick how-to videos. Coco's mom trying out new watercolor techniques and the painting up close. I too joined some of these vibrant creative communities that make videos about cooking and fashion. I noticed something magical in these videos: They could quickly get a point across—something that used to take a long time to learn with just text and images.  Last year, our small team within Area 120 , Google's lab for experimental projects, started building Tangi . It's an experimental social video sharing app with quick DIY videos that help people learn new things every day. Ta
