Upholding the legacy of Black entrepreneurship in Atlanta

Image
February is Black History Month across the U.S., but here in Atlanta, Black history is everywhere, year-round. Atlanta is the number one city for Black prosperity, and the country's fourth-largest tech hub. As more than a quarter of Atlanta's tech workers are Black, it's clear that our city's startup scene is just the latest iteration of a long legacy of Black entrepreneurship. There's a spirit in the city that inspired the entrepreneurs of the past, and continues to attract tech talent today. I was one of those entrepreneurs. When I founded my own startup, Partpic , I decided to do it not in Silicon Valley, where I had started my career, but in Atlanta. Partpic was acquired in 2016, but I opted to stay in Atlanta and continue to grow my roots in the tech and business community. It's home now. In my new role as U.S. Head of Google for Startups, I'll lead our continued support of Atlanta's Black founders, beginning with a few exciting efforts:

Samsung says some data leaked after mystery Find My Mobile notification

Image
Samsung's mobile users were taken by surprise last week when they received a random notification from the Find My Mobile app on their smartphones and tablets. It's a stock app that's baked right into Samsung's software. The mystery notification displayed the number "1" twice and simply disappeared when it was tapped. It didn't launch the app or perform any other action. It did spook a lot of users since the notification was received by countless users across the globe. Some even feared that perhaps Samsung's Find My Mobile service had been compromised. Samsung doesn't explain how it happened Samsung was quick to put those concerns to rest. The company sent out a statement saying that the notification was sent out by mistake during an "internal test." It didn't provide any specifics, only saying that it would do its best to prevent something like this from happening again. However not long after the notification was sent out

Samsung to push the Galaxy Fold 2 foldable screen to new standards

Image
The Galaxy Z Flip is the company's second foldable phone, but it is not a direct sequel to the original Galaxy Fold . Samsung is expected to launch a true follow-up, which we'll refer to as the ' Galaxy Fold 2 ' for the time being, in the second half of the year. The company will improve it in several key areas, including the foldable display which already has been made better with the Galaxy Z Flip. Now, according to fresh reports from The Elec citing industry sources, Samsung is working on combining transparent polyimide (PI) with Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) to create a new foldable screen solution for the Galaxy Fold 2. As Samsung has detailed before, the Galaxy Fold's screen uses polyimide whereas the Galaxy Z Flip employs Ultra-Thin Glass. Samsung's new foldable solution might support the S Pen UTG is structurally stronger than PI and a better fit for touchscreens, but the downside is that it is extremely brittle. This is why it requires a softer protect

Working from home? Use these 6 tips for better video calls

Image
In the life of a working mom, flexibility is key. And in the life of a sometimes-work-from-home working mom, technology is the reason I can be flexible. Sometimes my kid gets sick, or I need a plumber to come fix the toilet. I'm lucky to have a job that lets me work remotely, in an age where videoconferencing is an acceptable way of staying on track with the day's meetings.  But videoconferencing isn't always easy. The kids climb on you, the dog barks, there's background noise … you get the idea. I've had some embarrassing moments and made plenty of mistakes, but I've learned a few things along the way. Here are my tips for successful videoconferencing from home. (Got more tips? Mention @gsuite on Twitter.)  Tip #1: Choose the right environment When I want to talk through a complex issue or brainstorm ideas, video calls are more efficient than chat or email. They also help me get to know teammates in different time zones. But when you're on a call,

Samsung Members is the latest app to receive Dark Mode support

Image
Samsung kept bringing Dark Mode to more of its first-party applications following the release of Android 10 and One UI 2.0 , and the latest app to get this feature is Samsung Members . A new update is now rolling out for the app and pushes it to version 3.5.00.7 . Following this release, Galaxy smartphone users will notice that Samsung Members will follow the system-wide color mode and will run in Dark Mode as long as One UI does the same. Samsung has brought Dark Mode to a couple of its other apps this year, and last week, Dark Mode was added to Samsung Health alongside a few other UI changes. Galaxy Themes also picked up Dark Mode through a recent OTA update, leaving Samsung with only a couple of apps that have yet to support this feature. PENUP still needs a Dark Mode – or at least the feature is missing on version 3.4.00.6 – and the same goes for Samsung Smart Switch. Although arguably, Smart Switch should probably have the lowest priority to receive the feature as the

Check out Samsung’s high-tech production line for the Galaxy Z Flip

Image
Foldable smartphones are not easy to manufacture, yet Samsung has been able to put two of them on the market within one year. It speaks volumes about the technological prowess of the Korean juggernaut. The Galaxy Z Flip is its latest foldable smartphone and naturally, its manufacturing process is much more complicated compared to that of a conventional smartphone. The fact that this is the world's first foldable smartphone with a glass display doesn't really make things easier. Samsung has pulled back the curtain a bit to give us a glimpse of its high-tech Galaxy Z Flip production line. Samsung offers a glimpse of the Galaxy Z Flip production line The company has posted a short video online which shows the final stages of the Galaxy Z Flip production line. It would understandably not reveal some of the more advanced stages of production due to trade secrecy. Be that as it may, it's evident that Samsung employs a lot of advanced machinery to manufacture the Galaxy Z

Galaxy Z Flip output won’t be impacted by coronavirus-forced shutdown

Image
Samsung had to unexpectedly shut down its smartphone manufacturing plant located in Gumi, some 200 kilometers south of Seoul, South Korea. While the majority of Samsung smartphones are manufactured in Vietnam, the Gumi factory is responsible for its most premium devices, the Galaxy Fold and the newly released Galaxy Z Flip . While the shutdown was only implemented for the weekend and the factory is set to open today, there were concerns that the shutdown could cause supply issues for the new foldable smartphone. Samsung is confident that this won't be the case. Samsung factory shutdown won't impact Galaxy Z Flip supplies Samsung shut down the Gumi factory after a confirmed case of the coronavirus. Local reports reveal that a female employee who worked on the smartphone line was diagnosed with the virus on Saturday morning. Samsung immediately moved to shut down the plant and notified all employees that the Gumi factory would remain closed until Monday, February 24. Tha

Samsung adds more Screen Zoom options with One UI 2.1

Image
The Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy Z Flip run Android 10 with One UI 2.1. There are a few subtle differences between One UI 2.0 and One UI 2.1, and a few eagle-eyed enthusiasts have managed to find additional offers that come packed with the latter. Phones running One UI 2.0 offer only three screen zoom levels. Now, a Reddit user has found out that Samsung has added two more levels on the Screen Zoom scale on the Galaxy S20 . Hopefully, the feature is also present on the Galaxy S20+ , Galaxy S20 Ultra , and the Galaxy Z Flip , which also run the One UI 2.1 software. If you don't know what the Screen Zoom feature is, let us explain. It allows you to set how large or small the contents on the screen such as text and UI elements appear. This is different from the font size feature, which only affects the size of the font. We hope that these new options are rolled out to older phones with a software update. Some users, including me, prefer smaller elements and text so that more conte

Galaxy Buds+ support multi-device connection only on Samsung phones

Image
Samsung's newest true wireless earphones have garnered positive reviews all around ( read our review ), thanks to improved audio quality and longer battery life. However, the company has backtracked on one of the features it showcased during the launch of the Galaxy Buds+ . Now, the South Korean firm claims that the feature exists, but in a limited way. The official webpage of the Galaxy Buds+ had the 'multi-device connection' feature listed, but it was removed later. When DroidLife reached out to Samsung to clear the confusion, the company said that the multi-device connection feature works only on Galaxy smartphones running Android 7.1.1 (or newer) and have the SmartThings app installed on them. Here's the company's official statement: " Galaxy Buds+ offers users a convenient way to transition across devices that are logged into the same Samsung account with the SmartThings app installed. Improved frequency management for Programmatic Guaranteed

Image
Frequency management helps marketers and agency partners deliver a better user experience and reduce budget waste by controlling the number of times people see their ads. That's why, when we introduced Programmatic Guaranteed in Display & Video 360 a few years ago, we gave you a way to manage ad frequency across these deals and your open auction buys together. Once you reached your frequency goal for a specific user across both buys, the open auction portion of the campaign would stop showing ads to that user. However, Programmatic Guaranteed would continue to serve ads to a user beyond your frequency goal until you reached the total number of impressions secured in the deal, consistent with a traditional reservation deal. Now we're improving how frequency management works for Programmatic Guaranteed deals in Display & Video 360. Once your overall campaign frequency goal has been reached for a user, whether via open auction, Programmatic Guaranteed, or a

Samsung Galaxy Buds+ review: All about the battery, baby

Image
Last year, Samsung launched its first Galaxy Buds together with the Galaxy S10 series. While that device still actually had a 3.5-mm headphone jack, the Galaxy S20 does not. And with the disappearance of traditional headphones, the need for better wireless ones grows. Enter the Galaxy Buds+. Launched together with the Galaxy S20 series, the Galaxy Buds+ promise improvements across the board. We spent a week with the next generation of Samsung's wireless earbuds. What is better, and what is new? Read on and find out in our Galaxy Buds+ review. Galaxy Buds+ battery life To make things easy for the tl;dr crowd, we will get straight to the most important upgrade that Samsung included to justify the 'plus' moniker. The improvement in battery life is impressive. The additional 0.7 gram per bud provides nearly 50% extra battery capacity, resulting in a similarly extended play and talk time – actually around the 11 hours on a single charge that Samsung officially quotes. Native Dependencies in Android Studio 4.0

Image
By Dan Albert, Software Engineer One thing that NDK users struggle with is managing native dependencies: Library authors need to maintain support for both ndk-build and CMake (and hope that their users are using one of those two options and not something else). Libraries don't always distribute prebuilt binaries for Android, so users must either build the library themselves or rely on (potentially untrustworthy) prebuilt binaries found elsewhere on the web. Android-specific build scripts are often out of date and no longer work. Libraries are sometimes built by a build system that Android doesn't support. Libraries may not build on the user's machine. For example, Unix shell scripts won't run on Windows. Libraries often depend on other libraries, leaving users to chase them down and start the process again. With version 4.0 of the Android Gradle Plugin, we've addressed these issues by adding support for distributing and exposing native libraries

How one Googler creates more than music at Carnival

Image
While many Brazilians grow up celebrating Carnival, this wasn't true for Christiane Silva Pinto. It wasn't until college when she joined her first bateria that it became an incredibly important tradition to her. "When I was playing in college, I loved the music and practicing with the band, but I also loved that I got to know more about that culture I hadn't been in touch with when I was a kid," says Christiane, who played the drums in her college bateria, which is a Brazilian percussion band.  "Some of the people who played with us had experience playing in the Carnival parades, and those stories were contagious." Today, in addition to working as an Associate Product Marketing Manager for Google helping small and medium-sized businesses in Brazil, Christiane is part of a band that plays every year during the iconic Carnival in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where a sea of spectators gather every year.  Carnival lasts for four days, and much of the celebr
