Galaxy Tab S7’s lack of an IP rating will hold it back from being truly great

Image
Samsung is one of the very few companies that still make flagship Android tablets. It basically has the field all to itself and even though the tablet market may be in a decline, Samsung is still committed to this form factor. That's why it's launching not one but two models of its upcoming flagship tablet – the Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Tab S7+. They will definitely be great devices with the latest in mobile technology but there's one thing that will prevent them from being truly great. That's the lack of an IP rating. We have long talked about the benefits of having an IP rating on a flagship Samsung tablet. That wish is not going to be fulfilled by the Galaxy Tab S7, though. We exclusively revealed the Galaxy Tab S7+ specs today and it doesn't have an IP rating. The same obviously holds true for the Galaxy Tab S7 as well. A dust and water resistance guarantee is one of the features that we wanted to see from the new flagship tablet . Samsung's high-end

Watch BTS unbox Galaxy S20+ and Buds+ BTS Edition

Image
Following several teasers and countless fan requests, Samsung released the full video of BTS unboxing their very own edition of the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy Buds+. Both devices are already available for purchase in many countries around the world, with additional stock being on its way. That's largely on account of the fact pre-orders went better than expected , and it's not like Samsung wasn't expecting much, either. After all, the company didn't hire history's most popular boy band because it just wanted to sell a few extra smartphones, it did so to appeal to a rather broad demographic consisting of tens of millions. The BTS effect While it remains to be seen how the Galaxy X BTS campaign pans out in terms of sales, Samsung already reaped some pretty amazing rewards in the brand value department. The K-Pop phenomenon is hence primarily responsible for the new social media heights Samsung reached in recent months as BTS fans shattered all of its Twitter record

Here’s to you: 15 years of Google Earth stories

Image
We've always said that if Google Maps is about finding your way, Google Earth is about getting lost. With Google Earth, you can see our planet like an astronaut from space, then travel anywhere on it in seconds with a click or tap. Even after an entire afternoon exploring cities, landscapes and stories on Google Earth, you'll have barely scratched the surface. Now 15 years old , Google Earth is still the world's biggest publicly accessible repository of geographic imagery. It combines aerial photography, satellite imagery, 3D topography, geographic data, and Street View into a tapestry you can explore. But Google Earth is much more than a 3D digital globe. The underlying technology has democratized mapmaking allowing anyone to better understand our world, and take action to create positive change. Of the billions of people who have used Google Earth over the years, here are 15 stories that have inspired us: 1. Responding to natural disasters . Two month

Ask a Techspert: How do machine learning models explain themselves?

Image
Editor's Note: Do you ever feel like a fish out of water? Try being a tech novice and talking to an engineer at a place like Google. Ask a Techspert is a series on the Keyword asking Googler experts to explain complicated technology for the rest of us. This isn't meant to be comprehensive, but just enough to make you sound smart at a dinner party.  A few years ago, I learned that a translation from Finnish to English using Google Translate led to an unexpected outcome. The sentence "hän on lentäjä" became "he is a pilot" in English, even though "hän" is a gender-neutral word in Finnish. Why did Translate assume it was "he" as the default?  As I started looking into it, I became aware that just like humans, machines are affected by society's biases. The machine learning model for Translate relied on training data, which consisted of the input from hundreds of millions of already-translated examples from the web. "He"

Samsung conflicted about Galaxy S20 Fan Edition specs: rumor

Image
While it's still too early to be certain what kind of specs will the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition be packing come early next year, recent rumors suggest Samsung is – or at least was – pretty conflicted about the subject. Meaning that while the Snapdragon 865 is currently expected to be part of the package, Samsung was considering reusing the Snapdragon 855 up until recently. Nevertheless, the company is said to be planning on disabling the Snapdragon 865's 5G modem in select markets. The idea is to cut down on licensing costs in places like India where 5G infrastructure is far from widespread or doesn't exist yet, so using next-generation connectivity as a major selling point is out of the question. Strong competition is always good news for consumers Other Galaxy S20 FE specs that have been rumored about this week include a 50-megapixel main camera, an FHD Super AMOLED display whose refresh rate is still up in the air, and the ISOCELL GN1 , a first-party 50MP camera sensor

In practice, the only actual requirement for sharing content to the Flip in real time is having a stable Internet connection. Samsung doubling down on work-from-home solutions The integration is enabled by Webex Room Kit Mini, an enterprise IT solution which packs a wider range of video confe

Galaxy Tab S7+ may support 45W super fast charging after all

Image
Samsung's upcoming flagship tablet – the Galaxy Tab S7+ – should finally offer a modern fast charging solution, as suggested by a newly spotted product certificate. This possibility comes shortly after another certification authority indicated the entire lineup may be stuck with 15W charging that's ancient by technology standards. Now, however, it seems that at least the higher-end model will be adopting a standard worthy of its price tag. Published by Danish authorities in late June, the newly surfaced certification mentions three model numbers of the Tab S7+, all of which were already rumored about: SM-T970, SM-T976N and SM-T976B (the international Wi-Fi model and the Korean and international 5G variants). The certification mentions both 15W and 45W as supported charging speeds, so it seems at least the bigger of the Galaxy Tab S7 duo will be able to charge at 45W. About time for premium tablets to embrace premium charging standards With the Galaxy Tab S7+ featuring a

Our Startups Lab will coach aspiring news entrepreneurs

Image
The opportunity was obvious to me: I wanted to create an email newsletter that explained complex stories to help readers make sense of what was happening in their city. So my cofounder and I created a Google Slides presentation outlining our intended audience, editorial mission and back-of-the-napkin budgeting. Our next steps? Those weren't so clear. That was nearly four years ago, and after bumbling my way through launching the project, I knew there needed to be a better support system for future aspiring entrepreneurs. Since joining Local Independent Online News (LION) Publishers , an association with nearly 300 U.S. and Canadian-based news businesses, I've talked with dozens of our members who at some point also thought to themselves, "OK, now what do I do?" That's why LION Publishers has partnered with the Google News Initiative to launch the GNI Startups Lab , a program that will help aspiring news entrepreneurs in the U.S. and Canada prove there is

Galaxy A51 5G review: Samsung’s cheapest 5G phone is a solid buy

Image
Samsung knew that the Galaxy A51 had to be a worthy successor to the Galaxy A50. The latter was one of its best-selling devices in 2019 and it would only be in Samsung's interests to replicate that success in 2020. The Galaxy A51 was able to do that for the most part. It lived up to its expectation of being a great mid-range device. However, Samsung had an ace up its sleeve in the form of a 5G variant. The Galaxy A51 5G is the cheapest 5G smartphone that Samsung sells. In some markets, it's one of the very few and often the only 5G device available in that price bracket. 5G compatibility on a device that's already proven to be a mid-ranger worthy of your money. What's not to like? There aren't many noticeable differences between the LTE Galaxy A51 and its 5G sibling but the few that exist warrant a fresh review of the device. Let's dive into our Galaxy A51 5G review. Galaxy A51 5G design The Galaxy A51 5G looks just like the LTE variant, no surprises
