Rumor: Samsung switching to software navigation keys with 3D Touch-like functionality for the Galaxy S8

We exclusively reported earlier this month that Samsung is ditching the physical home button on the Galaxy S8 for a better screen-to-body ratio. Bloomberg reported around the same time that the upcoming flagship smartphone from Samsung would feature a virtual home button for an ‘all-screen front’. Now, David Ruddock from Android Police has tweeted more details regarding the navigation keys on the Galaxy S8.

According to David, Samsung has decided to ditch hardware navigation keys on the Galaxy S8. It appears that the company is finally switching to on-screen navigation keys with some 3D Touch-like functionality, which means that Samsung will use a pressure-sensitive screen. Soft keys are said to be configurable too. The fingerprint sensor has been allegedly removed from the front of the device, but its new place is not known yet. Synaptics recently launched the first optical fingerprint scanner for smartphones, and it is likely to be used in the Galaxy S8. However, no one is sure if it will be placed under the screen or at the back of the device.

It appears that Samsung is finally aligning its thoughts with Google’s regarding navigation keys on Android smartphones. However, we should take this information with a pinch of salt as nothing can be said for sure until the Galaxy S8 is officially unveiled sometime next year.

Samsung to build a P3 ‘total semiconductor factory’ in Pyeongtaek by 2021

It hasn't been long since Samsung completed the construction of its P2 semiconductor plant in Pyeongtaek, but now, the company is preparing to build its 3rd 'P3' semiconductor factory in the same city in the Gyeonggi Province. According to reports from the local media , Samsung wants to start constructing the P3 plant in September and make it fully operational by the end of 2021. The P3 plant will reportedly be 300 meters longer than the existing P2 plant, topping a total of 700 meters in length. Constructing the building itself should take roughly a year, and a few additional months will be needed to install the necessary equipment and ready it for mass production. Sony Announces Smaller Digital Paper E-Ink Writing Tablet

Sony has now announced a smaller follow-up to last year's Digital Paper E-ink writing tablet, the DPT-RP1. That's according to a new announcement made today via Sony's official blog. The new tablet – also dubbed with Digital Paper branding but sold under the model number DPT-CP1 – seems to be the same basic design as the previous model. However, while that earlier device was sized as close as possible to A4 paper with a 13.3-inch display, the new model drops to A5 with a 10.3-inch display. That should make its use much easier under a wider number of circumstances since it will arguably be easier to hold in one hand while writing with the other.  However, there will certainly be other benefits as well.
