[Interview] How Samsung is Ushering in the HDR10+ Era

Image
Samsung Electronics’ recent introduction of HDR10+, an open standard for high dynamic range (HDR) video that optimizes brightness levels from scene to scene and allows for greater contrast and true-to-life colors, signals the beginning of a new era in home entertainment. An era that will allows consumers to enjoy the best possible viewing experience by making immersive and lifelike visuals the new normal.   Samsung Newsroom sat down with the Vice President of Samsung Research America’s Digital Media Solutions Lab, Bill Mandel, to discuss the ins and outs of the open-source platform, as well as Samsung’s efforts to accelerate its adoption.       Q. In a nutshell, how does HDR10+ help Samsung’s QLED TVs create immersive viewing experiences?   HDR10+ processes images dynamically, allowing for scene by scene, and at times frame by frame picture enhancement. QLED TV’s advanced image technologies make the displays fully capable of portraying these optimized visuals.   This dynam

HDR10+ Sets a New Standard for Picture Quality at IFA 2017

In today’s era of Ultra HD (UHD) TVs, the ultimate goal for those who innovate TV technologies is to achieve lifelike visuals that they seem to pop out of the display. Samsung Electronics’ IFA 2017 booth will feature exhibits that show a part of its efforts to reach this goal, demonstrating how HDR10+, the latest advancement in high dynamic range (HDR) technology, is setting a new standard for picture quality.   The royalty-free HDR10+ standard promotes vibrant and vivid visuals that bring us closer than ever to true-to-life images. Samsung’s recent announcement of partnerships with Panasonic and 20 th Century Fox will expand the platform’s ecosystem of compatible technologies, eventually making such immersive visuals standard fare.   But how exactly does HDR10+ establish this new standard, and what will the technology’s advancement mean for content creators, device manufacturers, and the future of home entertainment? To answer those questions, let’s take a closer look at how S

SamMobile Daily Recap: August 31, 2017 — Galaxy Note 8, Gear Sport and more!

We publish  a lot  of stories on a daily basis. Unfortunately, the majority of news breaks during our European hours of operation, which makes it difficult for our readers in the US (and other regions) to keep up. However, we think we’ve come up with a fantastic solution — a  daily recap . Here’s what we covered today. Samsung’s aiming to sell 700,000 units of the Galaxy Note 8 in one month

Image
Samsung is aiming to sell a total of 700,000 units—60 percent of the 64GB variant and the remaining 40 percent of the 256GB model—of the Galaxy Note 8 in South Korea during the first month of availability, according to a new report. More specifically, the firm is expecting 40 percent of all 64GB units it sells to be anodized in the new Deepsea Blue hue, while the rest should be made up evenly of the standard Midnight Black and Orchid Gray colors that debuted on the Galaxy S8. As for the 256GB version… Well, Deepsea Blue is tipped to account for 60 percent of all sales; the remainder will be Midnight Black. Although, that’s a bit too optimistic, if you ask me (I’d actually switch the figures the other way around). Related:  Samsung expects to sell more than 11 million Galaxy Note 8 units Notably missing from the list is the 128GB model and the stunning Maple Gold color variant—and that’s because they aren’t tipped to hit the shelves during the first month. They should, instead, d

Daily Deal: Save 65% on a pair of Level U Pro headphones

Amazon has slashed the price of Samsung’s Level U Pro Bluetooth headphones by 65%, meaning you can currently snag yourself a pair for $34.99, which is a fantastic price to pay for a set of earphones that are sweat resistant (and sound great). If you like the sound of the Level U Pro headphones and want to take advantage of this promotion, simply hit the  Buy Now  button below. You’ll need to hurry though, as Amazon has only set aside a limited amount of inventory for this deal. The post Daily Deal: Save 65% on a pair of Level U Pro headphones appeared first on SamMobile .

Galaxy J5 Prime Nougat update could arrive soon as the device gets Wi-Fi certification

Image
The Galaxy J5 Prime could soon receive the Nougat update, as the device was recently certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance running the not-the-latest-anymore version of the operating system. Samsung began updating non-flagship phones to Nougat a few weeks ago, starting with the Galaxy A series devices from last year, and it was only two days ago that the update started rolling out to the Galaxy J7 (2016) . The Galaxy J5 Prime Nougat update shouldn’t be too different from the update that has been released for other devices. You can count on a new user interface (though not the one seen on the Galaxy S8 and other 2017 devices launched with Nougat), improved battery life and performance, a tweaked Multi Window mode, the option to reply to notifications from the notification shade, new emoji, and more. The Galaxy J7 Prime, which was seen running Nougat two months ago , is likely to get the update at the same time as the J5 Prime, although there’s never a guarantee given how software updates

Samsung Electronics Expands Premium TV Lineup at IFA 2017

Image
Samsung Electronics announced today that it will introduce new flat screen 55- and 65-inch QLED TV models, the Q8F, and a 43-inch version of The Frame at IFA 2017. Samsung will also host the QLED and HDR10 (High Dynamic Range) Summit at IFA on September 1 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Berlin, Germany to offer insights into the advancement of quantum dot (QLED) displays as well as developing the full potential of the HDR10/HDR10+ ecosystem.   The Q8F is the flat screen counterpart to the previously launched curved screen lineup Q8C. Samsung is expanding its QLED TV line-up in Europe as it seeks to solidify its leading position in the global premium TV market. The new 43-inch version of The Frame combines both technology and art to provide consumers with design value that enables them to personalize and elevate smaller living spaces.   “We are proud to introduce a flat version of the Q8 in response to demand from European consumers seeking premium, flat and mid-size TVs,” said Sang

Samsung’s switched to a two-year refresh cycle for standard Gear S models

Image
On Wednesday, Samsung took to the stage in Berlin to unveil the Gear Fit2 Pro and Gear Sport . To most viewers, they were the highlight of the event, but we think there’s something more important to take away from it: the firm has switched to a two-year refresh cycle for standard Gear S models. Related:  Samsung launches the Gear Fit2 Pro fitness band once again Ever since Samsung uncovered the Gear S3 back in August 2016, the internet has been filled with reports claiming it would take the wraps off the Gear S4 at IFA, because it matched up with its record. It’s only when both the Gear Fit2 Pro and Gear Sport were spotted at the FCC did we assume that wouldn’t be the case. Related:  Samsung’s new Gear Sport smartwatch combines minimalistic design with military durability It’s unclear why the firm has altered the refresh cycle, but one thing’s for sure: the Gear S4 will be its best smartwatch to date, powered by its most innovative technology. We’re also expecting it to be th

T-Mobile to launch Galaxy Note 8 BOGO deal tomorrow

T-Mobile has offered Buy One Get One Free deal on the Galaxy S8 multiple times over the past few months. Deals like this give customers an incentive to purchase the new flagship smartphone from the carrier. It may soon offer a similar deal for the Galaxy Note 8. According to a new report, T-Mobile is going to launch its Buy One Get One Free deal for the Galaxy Note 8 starting tomorrow, September 1st. The deal will only be available for a limited time. Customers on its T-Mobile One and Simple Choice Unlimited plans will be able to take advantage of this deal. The deal will enable customers to buy a Galaxy Note 8 on T-Mobile’s equipment installment plan and add a line with a second Galaxy Note 8 , Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ on EIP. Once both phones have been bought, customers need to visit T-Mobile’s Promotions Center and enter a promo code. They will then receive a prepaid Mastercard which covers the cost of their second device. The report mentions that this deal is retroactive for

Samsung launches a new 43-inch version of The Frame TV

Image
Samsung unveiled The Frame TV concept at CES 2017 earlier this year. The idea behind this product is to make it blend into the background and display artwork. To some, it might look like an actual photo frame at first glance than a TV. Samsung announced three months ago that it’s releasing The Frame TV globally . It held a launch event at a museum or gallery in each launch market to highlight The Frame TV’s design and features. Available in 55-inch and 65-inch models, the TV offers UHD picture quality. Customers can get it with various frame options that range from Walnut, Oak, and White. The TV’s Art Mode feature enables it to show exclusive works of art like paintings. Samsung announced the launch of a new 43-inch version of The Frame TV at its IFA 2017 press event yesterday. It has also partnered with leading art galleries and museums to enhance it further as an art-centric device. The company has also announced a new partnership with the Prado museum. It plans to acquire alm

Gear S3 frontier vs Gear Sport: Specs comparison

Samsung unveiled a new smartwatch at its IFA 2017 press event yesterday. It’s not an entirely new smartwatch but rather an improved version of its existing smartwatch. The Gear Sport’s design is quite similar to the Gear S3 frontier and the specs are similar as well. The Gear S3 frontier vs Gear Sport specs comparison should help you decide which smartwatch you should purchase. Go for the former if 4G LTE connectivity is important to you. Opt for the new Gear Sport if you want to take it swimming with you . If you want more, then wait until next year because it’s unlikely that the Gear S4 will be launched before then.   Gear S3 frontier Gear Sport Display 1.3-inch 360 x 360 full color, Gorilla Glass SR+ 1.2-inch 360 x 360, full color, Gorilla Glass 3 Dimensions 46 x 49 x 12.9 mm 42.9 x 44.6 x 11.6 mm Processor Dual-core 1.0 GHz Dual-core 1.0GHz RAM 768 MB 768 MB Storage 4GB 4GB Software Tizen Tizen Battery 380mAh 300mAh Other features Wi-
