Samsung DeX transforms the Galaxy S8 and S8+ into desktops

Image
Along with the Galaxy S8 and the S8+ , Samsung also unveiled a bunch of official accessories of the new smartphones, including cases, wireless chargers, and a docking station for the smartphones. These smartphones are equipped with powerful, desktop-grade processors (Exynos 8895 or Snapdragon 835), and to leverage this power, Samsung has developed a docking station for the Galaxy S8 and S8+. Samsung DeX is a wired docking station that can not only rapidly charge the Galaxy S8 or the S8+, but also turn them into Android-based desktops by providing “ a secure desktop-like experience ” to the users. The DeX can be easily used to display and edit data from a compatible smartphone, making the device “ faster and smarter. ” Samsung has teamed up with virtual desktop software makers and companies like Microsoft and Adobe for offering a desktop-like experience for apps like Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Lightroom Mobile. The Dex is one of those products from Samsung that p

Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ pricing

Image
The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are official, after an insane amount of leaks that spoiled the surprise Samsung could have given us at the Unpacked event. You know the devices’ specs, you know what we think about them , but what about pricing? Well, as rumors had said, the Galaxy S8 is priced at Euro 799, while the Galaxy S8+ will cost Euro 899. High prices, yes, and they might be slightly more in some markets (or less, depending on where you buy them ). As usual, Samsung will announce pricing information for different markets in the coming days, and the general release date is set for April 28th. What do you think about the price tags carried by the Galaxy S8 and S8+?

Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ hands-on

Image
Just a few days before Samsung’s official Unpacked event, we were invited to see the company’s next big things, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ . Samsung’s latest flagships really are big and have a huge responsibility on their shoulders: making people forget the Galaxy Note 7 debacle. As far as taking a new approach goes, Samsung has done a pretty good job this year, with a lot of changes that make the Galaxy S8 and S8+ different from previous Galaxy S flagships. The design is where the new direction is most evident. Samsung has ditched its home button, and the company says “designing this phone took years.” That’s not far from the truth, given how that home button itself has been a part of Samsung phones for so long. The Galaxy S8 has the same basic build that was introduced with the Galaxy S6: glass on the front and back, and metal on the sides. This makes for the same premium feeling as its predecessors, but the Galaxy S8 is much narrower than any Android phone Samsung has made. T

The bezel-less display with its impressive screen-to-body ratio has been christened Infinity Display . It’s a smooth, continuous surface with no harsh angles or buttons to provide users with a truly immersive viewing experience. The new flagship has the same metal and glass build that we’ve come to expect from Samsung flagships. The Galaxy S8′s compact design makes it very easy to use one-handed and with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both the front and back, users can be assured of its dura

Pay to Play: An examination of Samsung’s rising smartphone prices

We’ve seen the cost of the next Galaxy already, enough to know that Italy will have it a little harder than the rest of us with buying the upcoming devices, but some believe these new prices are indicative of an upward trend for Samsung: that is, the upcoming prices are part of a phone trend for Samsung that will continue to rise with each new passing year. That motivated us here at SamMobile to get down to business and spend time tracking the costs of the Galaxy S series since the Galaxy S2 . In this study, four markets and their off-contract smartphone costs were considered: 1) USA, 2) Europe, 3) Korea (Samsung’s home country), and 4) India. In conducting this study, we also had to focus on both specific prices and price ranges, so don’t be surprised if your specific smartphone costs are slightly more or less than the prices provided here. As for the phones discussed in this study, the mainstream Galaxy S phones (no Note phones) are the only ones taken into consideration. What th

We knew that it was only a matter of time before the update made its way to other markets across the globe. Last week, Nougat for the Galaxy Note 5 was released in 8 additional markets . Today, Samsung is rolling it out in India. The Galaxy Note 5 (SM-G920G) is now receiving the Android 7.0 Nougat update in India. Firmware version N920GDDU3CQC7 is being rolled out for the handset. Refurbished Galaxy Note 7 will not be sold in the United States

Samsung confirmed yesterday that it’s going to bring back the Galaxy Note 7 . It’s going to sell refurbished units in select markets across the globe. These units will reportedly have a smaller battery so that they don’t catch fire like the original units did. Samsung has said that it’s going to work with local regulators in different markets across the globe to get approval for this plan and it has confirmed that the refurbished Galaxy Note 7 won’t be sold in the United States. “The objective of introducing refurbished devices is solely to reduce and minimize any environmental impact,” the company said in a statement provided to The Verge , also hinting that the device may be renamed entirely when refurbished units hit the market. “The product details including the name, technical specification and price range will be announced when the device is available,” it added. Refurbishing Galaxy Note 7 is part of Samsung’s three-step process to recycle millions of Galaxy Note 7 devices th

March security update now arriving on the Galaxy S5 in Europe

Image
Hot on the heels of the Galaxy J3 (2016) , Samsung has started distributing the March security update  for the Galaxy S5 (yeah, you read that right!) in Europe. As you’re probably well aware by now, the upgrade bundles patches for 73 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures in the Android OS and 12 fixes specifically for Galaxy smartphones. If you haven’t received the OTA yet, but would like to see if it’s ready for your Galaxy S5 , open up the Settings menu, then select the relevant option from the Software Update section under the About Device subheading. Alternatively, you can always wait until you receive a notification prompting you to install the update (firmware version: XXS1CQC8 ).

Samsung releases March security patch for the Galaxy J3 (2016) in Europe

Image
Samsung has started rolling out this month’s security update for the Galaxy J3 (2016) in Europe. The upgrade transports patches for a total of 73 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures in the Android OS and an additional 12 fixes specifically for Galaxy-branded smartphones. There’s one thing we should note, though. The OTA weighs in at approximately 170MB — so if you’re on a strict cellular data cap (say, around 1/2GB per month), you’re probably going to want to connect to a Wi-Fi network before downloading it to avoid incurring any nasty charges.

Samsung Z4 certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance

Image
A little more than two weeks after it was spotted on the FCC’s online database , Samsung’s next-generation Tizen smartphone, the Samsung Z4 ( SM-Z400F ), has been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance. Unfortunately, details about the Samsung Z4  are sparse. All we know for certain is that it’ll be the first device on the market to ship running the next major build of the operating system, Tizen 3.0 , and will be powered by a 2,050mAh battery.

Samsung Launches Digital Learning Program to Help Preserve Taiwan’s Indigenous Languages and Cultures

Image
Settlers and foreign occupants have inhabited Taiwan for centuries, but indigenous peoples have called the island home for 8,000 years, and passed down distinct cultures, wisdom and languages that have endured for generations. Although 16 indigenous languages are still in use today, Taiwan’s earliest inhabitants constitute just 2 percent of its current population, and studies show that their vital contributions to the country’s heritage are in danger of becoming lost.     To help preserve indigenous peoples’ cultural legacy, on March 6, Samsung Electronics Taiwan partnered with the Council of Indigenous Peoples and National Chengchi University to launch a digital learning program that supports conservation through education.     The government organization selected 10 indigenous schools from 8 tribes to take part in the first stage of the project – the latest initiative of Samsung’s Smart School program – and the university contributed resources and expertise, designing a curri

Beyond the Horizon Project: Modern Technologies Serving People

The opening ceremony of the Beyond the Horizon project and a photo exhibition of a young photographer, Alexander Zhuravlev, took place in the White Hall of the Lumiere Brothers Center of Photography.   Beyond the Horizon is a joint initiative of Samsung Mobile, White Cane non-profit organization and Shazam. Creators of the project set a task for themselves to use the inspiring story of Alexander Zhuravlev, a photographer who lost almost all of his sight, to show people what they can achieve, assist with realizing their creative potential and getting the most out of their lives, as well as give a vivid and grounded proof that many obstacles that seem overwhelming are merely a challenge one should counter.   Alexander Zhuravlev lost almost all of his sight when he was 11 years old. Despite all the difficulties, he was able “to see beyond the horizon” of his capabilities and become a photographer, bringing to life his childhood dream. For that, he needed just a smartphone, using which

Unlocked Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge finally get March security update in US but that’s not enough

Samsung has taken a lot of flak from unlocked Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge owners in the United States. Despite the fact that factory unlocked devices normally receive updates sooner than their carrier-locked counterparts, the unlocked Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge last received an update in the US back in December. Samsung released Android 7.0 Nougat for last year’s flagships and carriers in the country have rolled it out yet Nougat still eludes the unlocked version in the US. You can understand why customers are not feeling happy about this. The company apologized for the delay a couple of weeks ago which it chalked up as the consequence of “various circumstances.” It committed to sending out monthly security updates for unlocked devices in a timely fashion. It has now followed through. Both the unlocked Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are now receiving an over-the-air firmware update in the United States which brings the March security patch. Firmware versions G930UUES4AQC1 and G9

Galaxy Note7 could make a return as a refurbished phone

Image
Hot on the heels of the upcoming Galaxy S8 unveiling, Samsung today issued a statement that outlines how the Korean company plans to handle the recalled Galaxy Note7 devices. The first and interesting way Samsung suggests that the Galaxy Note7 could be relaunched in the market as “refurbished phones or rental phones”. The key phrase in Samsung’s statement is “shall be considered” because the return of the phone depend on Samsung’s discussions with the authorities and most importantly, carriers and consumer demand. If there’s a lukewarm or negative feedback, the possibility of Galaxy Note7 returning is as good as nothing. Samsung is also looking to salvage the components like semiconductors and camera modules, which Samsung says, can be used for test devices and extract important metals like copper, nickel, gold and silver by utilising eco-friendly companies specialising in such processes. Our video review of the Galaxy A5 (2017) is now online!

Image
A little over a month ago, we published our comprehensive review of the mid-range Galaxy A5 (2017) — and now we’ve released our accompanying video review. If, after reading our thoughts, you’re still torn between whether to pick it up or not, the short, in-depth clip should help you make a decision. Check it out below:

Samsung confirms that it is bringing back the Galaxy Note 7 as a refurbished device

We had reported a few weeks ago that Samsung might sell the Galaxy Note 7 as refurbished units shortly . The South Korean smartphone giant has now confirmed that it will bring the Galaxy Note 7 as a refurbished smartphone in some markets depending on regulatory approvals and local demands. In an official blogpost, Samsung has announced that it has established three principles to ensure that all the Galaxy Note 7 units are recycled and processed in an environment-friendly way. First, the smartphone will be considered to be used as a refurbished or rental phone wherever applicable. Second, reusable components and parts of the device would be detached for reuse. Third, valuable metals and other such parts shall be extracted using environment-friendly methods. This appears to be a walk back from the company’s plan to not bring back those units to the market. Regarding the use of the Galaxy Note 7 as a refurbished or a rental device, the company will consult with local regulatory author

Samsung to Set the Principles to Recycle of Returned Galaxy Note7 Devices in an Environmentally Friendly Way

Samsung Electronics has established three principles to ensure that Galaxy Note 7 devices are recycled and processed in an environmentally-friendly manner.   First, devices shall be considered to be used as refurbished phones or rental phones where applicable.   Second, salvageable components shall be detached for reuse.   Third, processes such as metals extraction shall be performed using environmentally friendly methods.   Regarding the Galaxy Note 7 devices as refurbished phones or rental phones, applicability is dependent upon consultations with regulatory authorities and carriers as well as due consideration of local demand. The markets and release dates will be determined accordingly.   For remaining Galaxy Note 7 devices, components such as semiconductors and camera modules shall be detached by companies specializing in such services and used for test sample production purposes.   Finally, for left over component recycling, Samsung shall first extract precious metals

Is Samsung now making up for smaller batteries by lowering display resolution?

Android 7.0 Nougat brought many new features to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, and we discovered a slew of minor changes the new version of the OS made across the board . One important change post Nougat was the lowered screen resolution, as the S7 and S7 edge default to Full HD after being upgraded from Marshmallow . Recent leaks are now suggesting that Samsung will be making Full HD the default resolution on the Galaxy S8 as well , and it makes me wonder if the company is doing this to make up for smaller batteries. With a 3,000 mAh battery, I’m not expecting the Galaxy S8 to offer great battery life with that 5.8-inch display up front. The Galaxy S7 barely managed to get through the day with the same battery capacity, and it had a display that’s considerably smaller than its upcoming successor. Use the S7 with two SIMs inside, and it further reduces its overall endurance, so I’m very worried the Galaxy S8 will be a repeat of the Galaxy S6. Yes, Super AMOLED displays are rather

Daily Deal: Save 21% on a Fast Charge Wireless Charging Stand

It also supports regular charging speeds for non-Samsung Qi-enabled devices. If you like the sound of the Fast Charge Wireless Charging Stand and want to take advantage of the deal, hit the Buy Now button below.
