Samsung investing $7 billion to increase flash memory production

Image
Aiming to capture rising demand, Samsung has announced that it’s going to invest $7 billion in a Chinese semiconductor plant to increase flash memory production. Samsung already happens to be the world’s largest manufacturer of memory chips and it wants things to stay that way. The money will be invested over a three-year period and will be poured into Samsung’s Xi’an semiconductor plant in China, the company confirmed in a statement today. NAND flash memory chips are used in a variety of devices such as connected smart objects to smartphones. Samsung is the undisputed leader in this market. It accounted for 41 percent of the global NAND market in the second quarter of this year. That’s more than double the 18 percent market share of its closest rival Toshiba. That’s not all. Samsung is also the biggest manufacturer of dynamic random access memory or DRAM as it accounts for 44 percent of the entire market. The company is now making timely investments to enhance capacity. It want

Star Pink Galaxy Note 8 launched in Taiwan

Image
Samsung has a habit of offering exclusive color options for its flagship smartphones in select markets across the globe. Taiwan happens to be one of those markets. After launching the Pink Galaxy S8+ there earlier this year, Samsung has now launched a Star Pink color option for the Galaxy Note 8 in Taiwan. The Galaxy Note 8 will be widely available in four color options – Midnight Black, Maple Gold, Orchid Gray and Deep Sea Blue. Star Pink appears to be exclusive to Taiwan. Samsung has a good reason for offering the handset in this color. This is a particularly popular color with customers in Taiwan. According to a report, 30 percent of all smartphones sold in the country are touting some shade of pink. This is why it makes sense for Samsung to offer this color option in Taiwan. The pink color isn’t just limited to the back panel. The metal frame is pink and so are all of the buttons. The same color has also been applied to the handset’s S Pen. Everything else remains the same.

SamMobile Daily Recap: August 28, 2017 — Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note 8 and more!

We publish  a lot  of stories on a daily basis. Galaxy S5 Neo Android 7.0 Nougat update rolling out now

Image
The Galaxy S5 Neo has almost hit its two-year support window for major Android platform updates. Samsung is going to sneak in one last major Android update before the handset is relegated to the long list of devices that are no longer supported. The Galaxy S5 Neo Android 7.0 Nougat update was spotted on a variant of the handset last month that surfaced at the Wi-Fi Alliance for certification. That’s when it became clear that it was going to receive the Nougat update, even though quite a lot of people thought it wouldn’t get the update. It’s a bit surprising to see that the Galaxy S5 Neo is getting the Nougat update. Samsung has a habit of forgetting about the many spin-off variants that it releases not too long after they hit the market. I’m sure those who are still holding on to this device won’t complain about getting Nougat. Samsung has started rolling out the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy S5 Neo . Firmware version G903WVLU1CQH4 is rolling out now for the handset i

Galaxy Note 8 display wins the highest ever A+ grade from DisplayMate

Image
DisplayMate, a specialist in display calibration and optimization, recently put the Galaxy Note 8’s OLED display through extensive testing. The Galaxy Note 8 holds up Samsung’s record of knocking it out of the park with its flagship displays. DisplayMate has awarded its highest ever A+ grade to the Galaxy Note 8’s display. “It is the most innovative and high performance Smartphone display that we have ever lab tested,” it added. This seems like a repeat of five months ago when DisplayMate said that the Galaxy S8 had the best smartphone display on the market at that point in time. It’s fitting that it’s another Samsung flagship that has taken that crown from the Galaxy S8. The Galaxy S8’s Super AMOLED Infinity Display reached close to 3K resolution (2960 x 1440 pixels at 570 ppi) with a peak brightness of over 1,000 nits. The Galaxy Note 8 hits similar figures, (2960 x 1440 pixels at 521 ppi), with a peak display brightness of over 1,200 nits. It sets a new record for smartphones.

Galaxy J7+ with dual cameras seen in the flesh in newly leaked photos

Image
The Galaxy J7+ is confirmed to be the Galaxy J7 model that will introduce a dual camera setup to Samsung’s budget lineup, thanks to a leaked promotional image . We have already seen the J7+ in the flesh through leaked images , and new images of the device have now surfaced online, serving to prove that dual rear cameras are indeed going to be a thing on more than just Samsung’s latest flagship . Rumors say the J7+ will have 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors working in tandem at the back, with f/1.7 and f/1.9 aperture on each respectively. The dual cameras will sit flush with the body, unlike the ones seen on an Oppo phone with dual cameras in one of the pictures. The front shooter will be a 16-megapixel sensor, slightly higher in resolution than the front camera on the regular Galaxy J7 (2017). Other specs are expected to include a 5.5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, the Exynos 7870 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a 3,000 mAh battery (which would be conside

Samsung Internet Browser’s new features are out of beta

Image
Samsung rolled out an updated beta of its Samsung Internet Browser three weeks ago. The beta brought several new features including a night mode. The company has now updated the stable version of the browser to version 6.0 and has made all of the new features available to everyone. The night mode is one of the biggest features included in this latest version of Samsung Internet. It helps limit the amount of bright light that users are subjected to. The night mode can be activated from the main menu in Samsung Internet. A “Sync with Samsung Cloud” option is onboard as well. It enables users to back up and restore their bookmarks and preferences in the cloud. Users will also see a new splash page which mentions all of the different ad blocking extensions that are available to users. The latest version of the app also opens up compatibility for non-Galaxy smartphones. Samsung confirmed this when the beta was released. The beta could also be installed on any Android device. This mean

Galaxy A (2018) series may tout the Infinity Display

Image
The Infinity Display was introduced by Samsung with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ earlier this year. Samsung has now brought it to the Galaxy Note series as well with its latest flagship . It would make sense for the company to bring the Infinity Display to its premium mid-range smartphones too. According to Twitter leakster @mmddj_china , the Infinity Display is coming to the Galaxy A series. Samsung already launched this year’s iteration of the series back in January. Therefore, it can reasonably be expected that the Galaxy A (2018) will feature the Infinity Display. Whether or not Samsung will bump the resolution up to Quad HD for these handsets remains to be seen. What we can expect is for them to have dual-edge curved displays with minimal bezels. This would allow for an increased screen-to-body ratio on those handsets. No further information is available at this point in time about the Galaxy A (2018) series. It will certainly come with upgraded internals and might possibly

Samsung expects to sell more than 11 million Galaxy Note 8 units

Image
The Galaxy Note 8 is Samsung’s first new Note phablet is almost two years. It did launch one last year but we all know what happened with the Galaxy Note 7 . The initial reaction to the launch has been good so far and it looks like the Galaxy Note 8 will end up doing well for the company. Samsung is hopeful that it will be able to move quite a lot of Galaxy Note 8 units. When asked about the company’s sales target for the new device in a recent interview, Samsung’s mobile chief DJ Koh said that the company expects to sell over 11 million units. He pointed out that the Galaxy Note 5 sold 11 million units and that Samsung is hopeful that the Galaxy Note 8 will sell more than that. The Galaxy Note 5 was the last new Note handset from Samsung. It performed reasonably well, even though many Galaxy Note 4 owners decided against updating because of several crucial factors . The company may adjust shipments down the line because it wants to keep selling more Galaxy S8 units as well. Sams

Samsung’s Lee files appeal against his jail sentence

Image
Lee Jae-yong, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics and the heir to the conglomerate, was sentenced to five years in prison last week. The sentence was handed down after his trial on allegations of embezzlement, bribery and perjury. Lee was alleged to have paid bribes to former President Park Geun-hye of South Korea through her close confidant in order to win the government’s support for a crucial merger of two Samsung subsidies which helped cement the Lee family’s control over the conglomerate. The prosecutors had actually recommended a 12 year sentence for the Samsung heir but the court saw it fit to only award a sentence of five years. “As a lawyer I cannot possibly agree with the juridical decisions and acknowledged facts involved in the verdict,” said Samsung’s in-house attorney Song Woo-cheo when the sentence was confirmed, adding that the decision would be appealed. Lee has now filed an appeal against last week’s ruling through his attorney Kim Jong-hoon. Lee’s attorneys s

Samsung has rolled out the August 2017 security patch for the Galaxy Note 4. This handset is almost three years old now and well beyond the two-year support window for major platform updates. However, Samsung is ensuring that some of its previous flagships receive the latest security updates. It rolled out the August security patch for the Galaxy S5 not too long ago as well. It’s rolling out firmware version N910FXXS1DQH8 for the unbranded Galaxy Note 4 in the Netherlands. The update weighs in around 200MB and brings the August security patch . It also includes optimizations for the battery as well as tweaks for overall device stability and memory management.
