This is (probably) our last Keyword post of 2019 (and the decade). It's cliche to talk about the passage of time, but as a new parent—my son was just a few weeks old at the time of this wrap-up post last December—I have an especially keen sense of how much can happen in a year. I also know it's important to savor the individual moments. In that spirit, let's look back at the stories that we shared from Google in 2019.   1. The Galaxy S10 has the fastest data transfer speeds in nearly every market, according to a recent report by Ookla based on data gathered by Speedtest Intelligence throughout Q3 2019. The benchmark compared the Galaxy S10, Apple iPhone Xs, and Huawei Mate 20 Pro in 15 markets to determine their average data speeds. Markets include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Galaxy S10 is the fastest phone in all but five markets According to the data shared by Ookla, the Samsung Galaxy S10 outperformed the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and iPhone Xs in terms of average data transfer speeds in every market except for France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and Nigeria, the latter of which seems to lack enough data to include anything but the iPhone Xs. It has finally happened: Samsung has stopped launching new smartphones with a year-old version of Android. If you have been following our recent coverage, you have probably heard that the Galaxy A51, Galaxy A71, and Galaxy A01, launched in the last couple of weeks , run Android 10 out of the box. Samsung is also prepping other new phones with Android 10 preloaded. This marks the first time the company isn't waiting for the launch of its next Galaxy S flagship before it starts putting out smartphones with the latest version of Android. It's unclear why Samsung decided to start doing so from 2019. We're assuming the fact that Android 10 (and One UI 2.0) isn't a big update has something to do with it. Samsung has launched the LTE variant of the Galaxy Watch Active 2 in India. The company launched its first LTE-enabled smartwatch in the country earlier this year with the Galaxy Watch 4G, more than a year after it was launched in other markets, but it hasn't taken so long to bring the Galaxy Watch Active 2 4G to India. The Galaxy Watch Active 2 4G, like the Galaxy Watch 4G, has an eSIM, and Samsung says carriers Airtel and Jio currently support the watch in India. As far as pricing is concerned, the Watch Active 2 4G will set you back by Rs 35,990 (~$505). It's steep pricing for a market where a lower price than that can get consumers flagship-grade smartphones; the Galaxy Watch 4G, at a starting price of Rs 28,490 (~$400), may be a better deal for those looking to save some cash. Much about the Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite is already known, but we still don't know when Samsung is going to unveil them. While some earlier reports projected their launch in December, more recent coverage is betting on January next year. Joining the latter, a new report in The Korean Herald says these devices might make an appearance at CES 2020. Before we proceed any further, it's worth stating that the report doesn't make it clear if this information is based on some inside source or merely a calculated guess. Either way, a  CES 2020 launch for these smartphones sound plausible for a multitude of reasons. First and foremost, these are near-flagship devices , so a major event like CES is a good place to unveil them (unless Samsung has plans for a dedicated event). Samsung has just released the stable Android 10 update for those who own an unlocked Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, or Galaxy S10+ in the US. Last week, major carriers including T-Mobile and Verizon pushed out the update for their users, and the unlocked models are getting the same update just a week later. The build number for the Android 10 update is G97*U1UEU2CSKP. With this update, you get all the Android 10 features, such as iPhone-like navigation gestures, in addition to One UI 2.0 , which brings multiple improvements over One UI 1.1 and some very useful features . These include a screen recorder, an enhanced dark/Night mode that now darkens the wallpaper as well , improved facial recognition, enhanced camera Pro mode , and more . Samsung has released a new Android 10 beta update for the Galaxy Note 9 less than a week after the previous update . With Samsung targeting a January rollout for the stable Android 10 update for the Galaxy Note 9, we're assuming the frequency of these updates will increase as the end of the year approaches. And it's possible the stable update will come out in early January, as the beta update released today includes just one bug fix. The new beta fixes the issue of translation with the S Pen not being available, and that's it. Unlike the latest Galaxy S9 Android 10 beta , the Note 9 isn't getting the January 2020 security patch, but we can expect that to be included in the stable update whenever it goes live. The unlocked versions of three pre-2019 Samsung flagships are getting the December security update this week in the US. Samsung has released the December update for the Galaxy S8/S8+ , Galaxy S9/S9+ , and the Galaxy Note 8 in the country. The software versions for the Galaxy S8/S8+, Galaxy S9/S9+ and Galaxy Note 8 updates are  G95*U1UES7DSL2,   G96*U1UEU7CSK1 and  N950U1UES7DSK5 respectively. Each of these updates brings only the newest security patch. The December security patch, as detailed by Samsung at the beginning of the month, fixes six critical vulnerabilities in the Android OS. Fixes for 13 vulnerabilities that affect only Samsung's software are included as well. One of these vulnerabilities could allow a connection to a new Bluetooth device on a locked device, while another granted access to the home screen wallpaper when brightness levels were adjusted without unlocking a device. The full Galaxy Note 10 Lite spec sheet has been leaked by the folks over at  WinFuture.de . The Galaxy Note 10 Lite is expected to be launched sometime in January alongside the Galaxy S10 Lite, and while details on the handset have been revealed in bits and pieces in the last couple of months, many of its specs have remained a mystery. Android 10 is greatly restricting access to external storage via filesystem APIs. Instead, we need to use other APIs to work with content. This is the eighth post in a series where we will explore how to work with those alternatives, now looking at MediaStore options. The Storage Access Framework offers the user the most flexibility of where your app's content should be placed. One key downside is that it requires the user to interact with some system UI to choose where to place the content. getExternalFilesDir() and related Context methods avoid that UI. However, the files that you create in these locations get removed when the app is uninstalled. That may not be appropriate for all types of content, as the user may get irritated if uninstalling the app deletes "their" files. The third option is MediaStore . Some of you may not fully agree with the title but there's enough evidence to support that the Galaxy Fold really is the best phone of 2019. Granted, it has been a bit of a roller coaster ride for Samsung's first foldable smartphone. Samsung first unveiled the Galaxy Fold at its Galaxy S10 launch event in San Francisco on February 20, 2019 . It wanted to be the first company to put a proper foldable smartphone on the market. Samsung announced that it would release the Galaxy Fold on April 26, 2019 for $1,980. Like many Samsung fans, we were very excited to see the device. As we mentioned in our Galaxy Fold hands-on , we were blown away by not only the device's futuristic look but also its sheer potential. This belief was strengthened when the review unit arrived in our office. We heaped praises on it in our Galaxy Fold review despite some shortcomings in the software. Samsung had strictly controlled the Galaxy Fold's exposure ever since the device was unveiled.

The Galaxy Note 10 series is now getting the Android 10 update in the US. Verizon is the first carrier to release the update in the country, and it remains to be seen when other carriers will join the party. Surprisingly, the Note 10+ 5G is being updated as well, despite Samsung having said the 5G variants of the Note 10 duo will not get the update before 2020 . According to owners of the Note 10 phones on Reddit, the Android 10 update won't show up on its own just yet. You will have to manually trigger the download by going into the  Software update  menu in the phone's settings. One user has reported seeing their device reboot constantly just half an hour after updating to Android 10, so it would be a good idea to make a complete backup of your phone's data before performing the update. The Galaxy S11 might be very difficult to repair, judging by recent reports indicating that Samsung has secured China's Weldbond as its new supplier for adhesives. The report passed along by The Elec claims that Samsung is going to move away from double-sided adhesive tape for its next flagship, and seal the Galaxy S11 using glue. Samsung will reportedly stop using double-sided adhesive tape supplied by local companies NDFOS and ANYONE Inc. and will acquire glue from Weldbond as well as US-based H.B. Fuller instead. The pros and cons of abandoning adhesive tape Modern smartphones have become more difficult to repair in the quest to minimize bezels, and the Galaxy S10 is a prime example of a device that you would not want to disassemble.
