Tools for language access during COVID-19

Image
Translation services make it easier to communicate with someone who doesn't speak the same language, whether you're traveling abroad or living in a new country. But in the context of a global pandemic, government and health officials urgently need to deliver vital information to their communities, and every member of the community needs access to information in a language they understand.. In the U.S. alone, that means reaching 51 million migrants in at least 350 languages , with information ranging from how to keep people and their families safe, to financial, employment or food resources. To better understand the challenges in addressing these translation needs, we conducted a research study, and interviewed health and government officials responsible for disseminating critical information. We assessed the current shortcomings in providing this information in the relevant languages, and how translation tools could help mitigate them. The struggle for langua

New predictive capabilities in Google Analytics

Image
Google Analytics helps you measure the actions people take across your app and website. By applying Google's machine learning models, Analytics can analyze your data and predict future actions people may take. Today we are introducing two new predictive metrics to App + Web properties. The first is Purchase Probability, which predicts the likelihood that users who have visited your app or site will purchase in the next seven days. And the second, Churn Probability, predicts how likely it is that recently active users will not visit your app or site in the next seven days. You can use these metrics to help drive growth for your business by reaching the people most likely to purchase and retaining the people who might not return to your app or site via Google Ads. Reach predictive audiences in Google Ads Analytics will now suggest new predictive audiences that you can create in the Audience Builder. For example, using Purchase Probability, we will suggest

July 2020 Android security update reaches Galaxy Fold

Image
The July 2020 Android security update is now being deployed to select Galaxy Fold models, with Samsung initiating the rollout just yesterday. Denoted by build number  F900FXXS4BTF2, the new over-the-air download debuted in over a dozen European markets at once, in addition to reaching Kazakhstan and Russia. Much like its designation suggests, this particular release is intended solely for the international, LTE-only variant (SM-F900F) of the Galaxy Fold. The U.S. model (SM-F900U1) and 5G-ready edition (SM-F907B) of the device are expected to follow suit in a matter of days. Samsung already distributed the same patch version to the majority of its contemporary flagships, as well as some unique-but-decisively-non-premium smartphones like the Galaxy Z Flip . Save for the new security patch level dated July 1st, this week's release targeting the original Galaxy Fold contains no other additions or changes. Patching things up ahead of the big event If your Galaxy Phone hasn'

Samsung close to foldable display breakthrough thanks to color filter bet

Image
Foldable smartphones are essentially guaranteed to get a lot better in the near future due to an industry-wide pursuit of color filters, industry watchers at UBI Research claim. Samsung is one of the companies at the forefront of the initiative which aims to replace conventional polarizers with a less limiting solution to reducing panel reflections. Polarizers have been an inseparable component of OLED modules since the said display tech first debuted in the TV segment back in 2007. Without them, any given OLED panel would basically just be an overpriced mirror. While polarizers hardly burdened OLEDs in the past, the emergence of foldable electronics made their drawbacks way more apparent. Most notably in regards to how they limit the actual flexibility of bendable screens, in addition to heavily impacting their maximum brightness. Who wouldn't want it to be thinner, brighter, and more flexible? Color filters, on the other hand, promise to deliver identical or better anti-ref

[Poll] How many chargers do you have lying around for our no-charger-in-box future?

Image
A report this week suggested that Samsung could stop shipping chargers in the box with new devices. The move would enable Samsung to further improve its margins on handsets, particularly mid-range devices that have razor-thin margins as it is. As you'd probably imagine, this possibility hasn't excited a lot of people. We're used to getting a charger with our new devices, no matter if it costs $100 or $1,000. The assumption being made is that most customers already have multiple devices so they're not exactly short on chargers. That does make sense to an extent . I use the one charger I have on my nightstand to charge my phone and do have more than a couple in spare that are still in the boxes of devices I've used over the years. Then again, most people don't review phones for a living and don't have multiple devices on hand. You could use the USB Type-C charger you got with your Galaxy Tab S6 to charge your Galaxy S20 Ultra , though, and that's t

Galaxy Note 9 getting July security patch in latest update

Image
Samsung has now released the July security patch for the soon-to-be-two-years-old Galaxy Note 9. Like many times in the past, it's German users who are getting the latest update first, with firmware version  N960FXXS6ETG1 rolling out to their phones. Only the July security patch is included in the update – no other new features, changes, or improvements are part of the package. The July security patch, detailed by Samsung earlier this week , fixes four critical Android OS vulnerabilities and 14 vulnerabilities that affect only Galaxy devices. Perhaps the most important fix in this month's security patch is for the bug that was making Galaxy (and other Android devices) crash when a certain kind of wallpaper was applied. Some other vulnerabilities that have been fixed include a memory leak that could expose important data and an exploit that allowed unauthorized write access to the SD card. The latest Galaxy Note 9 updated can be downloaded over the air using the Download a

Galaxy Z Flip 5G support pages go up ahead of possible August 5 launch

Image
Samsung's all set to hold a virtual Unpacked event  on August 5 to unveil its new flagships for the second half of 2020. The Galaxy Note 20 series is more or less confirmed to be the main star of the show, and it's expected to be accompanied by the Galaxy Z Fold 2 , the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and the Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+ . Samsung tends to start putting support pages for upcoming devices on its website a few weeks ahead of their announcement, and it has now done so for the least exciting product of the lot. A support page for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G — model number SM-F707B — has gone live on the Samsung Hungary website and it lists three variants of the device. These are likely to be for the three colors Samsung will sell in Hungary, though there should be a total of four color options for the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. As we had exclusively revealed, one of them is going to be a new copper finish that matches the copper version of the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Buds Live , and the oth

Live images of Galaxy Tab S7+ leak for the first time

Image
Samsung's next-generation flagship tablets, the Galaxy Tab S7 and the Galaxy Tab S7+ , are expected to be unveiled next month alongside the Galaxy Note 20. We exclusively leaked their specifications yesterday, and the Galaxy Tab S7's press render was leaked earlier today. Now, the live images of the Galaxy Tab S7+ have appeared on the internet. Thanks to the certification authority Safety Korea's website , we are getting a first look at the Galaxy Tab S7+'s (SM-T976N) rear design. The tablet appears to have a metal body and a dual-camera setup at the rear along with an LED flash. There also seems to be a dedicated area/cavity at the rear to store the bundled S Pen. There's also an AKG branding at the rear, most probably for its quad-speaker setup. At the front, there seems to be a front-facing camera and not much else. This corroborates the image of the Galaxy Tab S7 that was leaked earlier today. Supporting documents also reveal another model number of the ta

Upcoming Samsung wearable device appears in FCC filings

Image
Samsung is expected to launch multiple smartphones, tablets, and wearable devices over the next few weeks. The designs and features of the Galaxy Buds Live and the Galaxy Watch 3 have already been leaked . Now, another upcoming wearable device from Samsung has appeared in the FCC database. The diagram of the wearable has been revealed in the FCC filings, and it bears the model number SM-R220. The device seems to have a heart-rate monitor and charging connectors on the rear, which leads us to believe that it's a fitness-focused wearable. It could most probably be a successor to the Galaxy Fit or the Galaxy Fit e , which were launched in mid-2019. While the FCC filing doesn't guarantee that the device will be announced anytime soon, but it is close to the launch of the Galaxy Watch 3 and the Galaxy Note 20 . So, it is possible that Samsung might announce it during the Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event that's set to happen on August 5. Our sources tell us that the device w

First Galaxy Tab S7 press render appears in a new leak

Image

We had exclusively leaked the specifications of the tablets yesterday, revealing that they will come equipped with the Snapdragon 865+ processor that Qualcomm unveiled two days ago. Today, the first image of the Galaxy Tab S7 has been leaked. Prominent leakster Evan Blass published the first image of the Galaxy Tab S7 on his Patreon account earlier today. The image showcases the tablet's design from the front and the default wallpaper. The front-facing camera and two unknown sensors are visible in the leaked image. The power and volume buttons can also be seen. Galaxy Tab S7, Tab S7+ specifications The Galaxy Tab S7 and the Galaxy Tab S7+ will sport 11-inch and 12.4-inch Super AMOLED screens , respectively. Galaxy Buds Live leaks in three colors ahead of launch

Image
The first reports about bean-shaped wireless earbuds from Samsung started coming in three months ago . Last month, we exclusively reported that Samsung will launch its new earbuds in July alongside the Galaxy Watch 3. Today, the first set of images of the Galaxy Buds Live was leaked. The first press renders of the Galaxy Buds Live were posted by noted leakster Evan Blass ( @evleaks ) on his Patreon account. He shared images of the earbuds and their case. The first image shows the Galaxy Buds Live from up close, while the second image shows three color options that Samsung plans to offer. The earbuds seem to come in the Mystic Bronze color, which was also seen in the leaked images of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. The Galaxy Buds Live will also be offered in Black and White. The earbuds appear to have a glossy metallic finish, while the case appears to have a matte finish. The rounded square-shaped case has two charging status LEDs, one on the outside an
