Samsung Galaxy A8s gets Android Pie update in China

The Galaxy A8s is receiving the Android Pie update in China. The Galaxy A8s was Samsung's first phone with a punch-hole design, with the front camera residing in a cutout on the top left corner of the LCD display. Samsung later launched the A8s as the Galaxy A9 Pro in South Korea but hasn't launched the device in other markets. And for a device with limited availability like the A8s, Samsung has brought out the Android Pie update fairly quickly.

The update should include the usual suspects, including the One UI interface that makes one-handed usage more convenient and puts important information at the forefront. We can expect the software to be similar to what we find on other Galaxy phones that have been updated to Pie from Android Oreo, including flagships like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9. That means Samsung probably isn't offering features like Bixby Routines, although we have no way to be sure without access to the device.

The Galaxy A8s Android Pie update, which bundles the April 2019 security patch, should be available over the air for owners of the device in China. It's also available for download from our firmware database.

Google Play Points reward program is official, but only in Japan for now

... Earlier this month, Cody discovered evidence for a loyalty program  in a teardown of the Google Play app, and now we're seeing the first official word about it. The rewards scheme is called Play Points and has gone live in Japan, according to a support page for the app. Users can join the program by navigating to the 'Play Points' section in the app's hamburger menu. To begin with, one point will be awarded for every ¥100 (about $0.90) spent on apps and games — to be used on IAPs or converted to Google Play credit — but as you progress, higher levels can be achieved with even greater rewards. Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. Samsung Display retains its leadership It's pertinent to mention here that Samsung's Q1 market share is 6.6 percentage points lower than it was in the same period last year. Brazilians love the Galaxy S10 a lot more than the Galaxy S9

Samsung has announced that Galaxy S10 sales are outperforming Galaxy S9 and S9+ sales by 80 percent in Brazil a month after launch. The Galaxy S10 lineup had received twice as many pre-orders as the Galaxy S9 and S9+ in the country , and it looks like things got even better once the devices went on sale. Samsung isn't breaking down numbers by device, however, so we don't know which of the three Galaxy S10s is doing the best. Of course, one can assume it's the Galaxy S10+ leading the charge, but there's no way to say for certain.
