Oculus CTO calls Gear VR a missed opportunity

The launch of the Galaxy Note 10/10+ marked the end of Gear VR – a mobile VR feature that has been part of Samsung's Galaxy flagship smartphones for many years. It was born out of a partnership between Samsung and Oculus (now a Facebook subsidiary) and made its debut on the Galaxy Note 4 in 2014.

Neither of the companies has offered any explanation for the platform's demise so far, but Oculus CTO John Carmack shared some of his thoughts about Gear VR during his day two keynote and an impromptu fireside chat at the recent Oculus Connect developer conference. Referring to his comments as a eulogy for Gear VR, he called the phone-based VR headset a missed opportunity.

"It is probably time for me to give a bit of a eulogy for Gear VR. While the software is supported, the days are numbered. And I do think we missed an opportunity here," Carmack told the audience. He mentioned the sales of Gear VR were more than all other Oculus headsets, but customers didn't use them much due to, among other things, lack of simplicity and concerns over battery life.

Carmack also reportedly hinted that Samsung wanted Six Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) tracking and built-in cameras in Gear VR headsets, but Oculus pushed back citing performance and thermal issues. As things stand now, it appears Gear VR is dead, although Samsung has reiterated its commitment to AR and VR on many occasions.

Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. Samsung Display retains its leadership It's pertinent to mention here that Samsung's Q1 market share is 6.6 percentage points lower than it was in the same period last year. T-Mobile starts rolling out Android 10 update to Galaxy Tab S6

Samsung started the rollout of Android 10 to its current-generation flagship tablet, the Galaxy Tab S6 , three months ago. One month later, Verizon released the Android 10 update to the Galaxy Tab S6 on its network. Now, T-Mobile has released the Android 10 software update to the tablet on its network in the US . The new software update with firmware version  T867USQU2BTE1 brings Android 10 to the LTE variant of the Galaxy Tab S6 (SM-T867U). It also features One UI 2.1 and the May 2020 Android security patch . The file size of the update is over 2.1GB, so we would advise you to use a Wi-Fi connection to download the new software.
