OnePlus 6 gets $100 discount with early Black Friday deal

Image
Nov 19 AT 2:56 PM Evan Selleck 0 Comments Black Friday doesn't start until November 23, but that doesn't stop retailers from offering up discounts and promos well in advance of the big day. OnePlus is no different, as it has just announced its own early Black Friday deal that actually starts very, very early in the morning on Tuesday, November 20. Once the deal goes live, you can save $100 off a new OnePlus 6 . Unfortunately, to start, this is not $100 off the brand new OnePlus 6T . In addition to that, OnePlus isn't saying if it's a specific variant of the OnePlus 6 that's getting this discount. It seems like a safe bet that it's just $100 off the OnePlus 6, and which means you can get the standard option (6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage) for $429.00, or go up to the 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for $479.00 after the discount. At the time of publication, both the 128GB and 256GB models with 8GB of RAM are out of stock. That

Modern Dad's Black Friday wish list

Image
I've been playing with some new toys — and these definitely are things I'd look to pick up on sale this holiday season. I don't often have buyer's remorse. If I spend money on something, there's usually a pretty good reason why. But I do feel a pang of guilt when I buy something knowing full well that it's going to be on sale sometime soon. Such is the case with some of my latest procurements, however. The bad news? I could have waited and saved some cash. The good news? You still can. First things first: Keep it tuned to Thrifter — they're looking out for all these deals so you don't have to. Especially come Black Friday and Cyber Monday. That includes the stuff I'm talking about here: Google Home Hub Amazon Fire TV 4K TCL 6-Series Roku TV Ecovacs Deebot N79S Mint Mobile See anything else I should think about picking up? Sing out, soonest. Modern Dad Subscribe on YouTube Facebook Twitter Instag

These Photos Were Reportedly Shot Using A Google 'Pixel 3 Lite'

Image
Rumors and speculation around a leaked "Lite" variation of Google's Pixel 3 flagship developed under the codename "Sargo" have continued this week with the release of photos purported to have been shot using the device by Russian tech blog Rozetked . The samples seem to have been shot in Ukraine, with at least two photos appearing to highlight the Lutheran St. Paul's Cathedral in Odessa. Each also bears a striking resemblance, in terms of quality, to what one might expect from the recently announced Pixel-branded premium devices. That includes at least one image where lighting, background blurring, and zoom were are reportedly enhanced via the company's trademark Portrait Mode. Yet another of the images appears to have been taken from the base of the building, using Google's Ai-enhanced Super Res Zoom feature. Background:  As to the device itself, the images are said to have been taken using the very same Pixel 3 'Lite' that was leaked in im

OnePlus' first 5G phone could cost $100 more than the OnePlus 6T

Image
OnePlus clarified that its upcoming 5G phone will not be the OnePlus 7, but will still launch in early 2019. This suggests a new product line and rumors have already started appearing that it will come with a new price tag. The 5G-enabled OnePlus phone will cost $650/€650, according to people in the know. That's $100 over the OnePlus 6T , which sounds fairly reasonable considering that 5G in early 2019 will be bleeding edge – the iPhones may have to wait until 2020 to upgrade from 4G. This 5G model will likely use the Snapdragon 8150 chipset and the X50 modem . Even if it uses the X24 instead, it will certainly stick to Qualcomm parts given that the chip maker is OnePlus' new best friend (along with T-Mobile). Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm president, and Carl Pei on the stage of the 4G/5G summit in Hong Kong Chances are that the 4G OnePlus 7 will see a price bump too, but it should be much smaller than this. The OnePlus 6T launched at $550 with 128GB base storage, pre

It's that time of the year again: time to start buying gifts for the friends and loved ones in your life. We've slimmed down the massive number of affordable phones on the market to five in our Best Affordable Android Phones Gift Guide. THE BEST AFFORDABLE ANDROID PHONES Nokia 7.1 The best Android One phone on the market It used to be when you thought about affordable Android phones, that the idea of a slow, clunky experience would come to mind. After years of chasing the Windows Phone market, Nokia has returned to making Android devices. With the Nokia 7.1, the company has managed to deliver the best Android One phone we've seen thus far. Google News might shut down in Europe over prospective EU 'link tax'

Image
Europe's new digital copyright legislation has raised no shortage of concerns from business and consumer rights advocates alike. The severe new regulations include what critics have dubbed a "link tax" that would require most medium to large online platforms to pay copyright holders for reproducing even small snippets of text (though a few "individual words" is fine). This, of course, is at the core of Google News, and Google is adamant that it may shut down its news aggregation app in Europe if the EU does not alter the phrasing of its legislation. In an interview with The Guardian , Google's vice-president of news, Richard Gingras, stated that while it's "not desirable to shut down services," the company "can't make a decision until we see the final language." He also brought up a similar situation that had occurred in Spain. In 2014, the country attempted to institute a similar charge on links and Google did in fac

The best wireless chargers for the Pixel 3 and 3 XL

Image
The Pixel 3 and 3 XL are the first devices of the series to support wireless charging, and there are plenty of great charging stands to choose from. Google's own Pixel Stand is specialized for the new Pixels, but that doesn't make it the only option — though most other chargers are limited to 5W Qi charging with the Pixel 3. Made by Google Google Pixel Stand The Pixel Stand isn't just your run-of-the-mill wireless charger. It's made specifically with the Pixel 3 and 3 XL in mind, and triggers an advanced docked mode with Google Photos galleries and alarms that get gradually warmer and brighter to simulate sunlight. YouTube now offering free, ad-supported Hollywood movies

Image
In case it has escaped your attention, there is actually a section on your YouTube page that allows you to watch Hollywood movies. Well, of course, like any good digital citizen, you will have to pay for it to watch it. But now it looks like the video-sharing giant is offering some of these movies for free if you're willing to sit through some brand advertisements in between. This may signal the start of another revenue stream for YouTube and at the same time, offer ad-supported content for content-hungry users. According to Rohit Dhawan, the director of product management over at YouTube, they saw that beyond just paid movies, there was also a demand for ad-supported content. At the same time, this was also an opportunity to offer advertisers premium content to showcase their video ads, beyond just the normal channels and original content that they were previously being placed in. There may even be opportunities for advertisers to "sponsor" specific movies or

Comment: Lenovo Smart Display (8-inch) may be a better Black Friday buy than Google Home Hub

Image
While Google Assistant smart displays options are still quite limited, there's already a model for nearly every user. The first option was that of the Lenovo Smart Display . Though now, everything is compared to the Google Home Hub that undercut the pricing of everyone else . For Black Friday, however, the Home Hub and smaller Lenovo Smart Display have the same price tag, and I think Lenovo's might be a better buy. Here's why. The best gifts for Android users What the Lenovo Smart Display 8-inch does better – Sound Quality The biggest win in my opinion when comparing the Google Home Hub to the Lenovo Smart Display is the sound quality. Despite the 8-inch model's smaller size compared to the larger 10-inch we reviewed over the Summer , the sound quality is still solid. I think bass is slightly exaggerated, but the front-firing driver puts out sound that is full and loud. Considering I keep this model in my kitchen, that's perfect wh

By the end of this year, Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL users will be able to save Call Screen transcripts

Image
Google's Call Screen feature, which comes out of the box with the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, started rolling out last week to the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. By the end of the month, it will hit the Pixel and Pixel XL. Call Screen allows Google Assistant to screen an incoming call from an unfamiliar number, asking questions to the caller. The phone's user can monitor the conversation as it is being transcribed real time on the handset's display (see image at the top of this article), and decide whether to pick up the phone, report it as spam, or respond with a quick reply. [Update: Back in stock] Essential reveals its Audio Adapter HD, a $150 machined titanium external DAC for the PH-1

Image
Essential's Audio Adapter HD has finally been announced. The company has been talking about the existence of this new external headphone jack/DAC since  June , and this month's security update indicated we'd see it soon . But there are a few twists: It's $150 , and a limited edition. Andy Rubin originally promised new wireless accessories "every few months," but for whatever reason, it seems the company wasn't able to stick to that schedule. It's possible a lawsuit surrounding the modular accessory communication tech could have had something to do with the delay. Audio Adapter HD is here. A limited-edition DAC for Essential Phone, delivering one of the best mobile audio experiences available today. How not to buy a phone on Black Friday - three simple rules to smarter phone purchases

Image
Carriers aren't looking to cut you a deal. Installment plans are just contracts by another name. Last year's phone is not "just as good" as this year's. These are the three golden rules of Black Friday smartphone shopping. There are other important things to consider, sure, but those are the fundamentals that everyone needs to know and abide, because if you don't, you could end up with a phone you don't want that's stuck on a carrier you don't want to be with. And that  sucks. Rule 1: Carriers are almost always to be avoided Carriers bust out a crazy amount of promotions and discounts for Black Friday, but there's one deeply telling and consistent omission: service discounts. Carriers almost never, ever discount service on a promotional basis. If they do, it's because they're desperate to add subscribers and can't do so through typical retail channel promotions (cheap phones). T-Mobile used to occasionally offer so

Google releases ‘Fast Pair Validator’ app for Bluetooth manufacturers on the Play Store

Image
With the launch of Pixel Buds last year, Google announced "Fast Pair" as Android's solution for seamless Bluetooth accessory pairing to phones. Headphones  released in the past year that include Assistant often feature the solution, with Google last week releasing a "Fast Pair Validator" app for manufacturers implementing the functionality. Fast Pair is a part of Google Play services and therefore works with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and other newer devices. Taking advantage of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for advertising and discovery, classic Bluetooth is used for pairing. Users see a high priority notification that features a picture of the Bluetooth device. According to Google last year, "manufacturers get their brand, device name and companion app in front of the users." Last week, the Developed with Google account — responsible for ARCore Playground stickers — on Google Play released  "Fast Pair Validator," with the full, sh
