Google opens early registration for .app domains, general availability coming May 8

Three years ago, Google paid $25 million for exclusive rights to the '.app' top-level web domain. At long last, the company is now opening up registrations for .app, with the Early Access Program in full swing. The general public will have to wait until May 8, but various companies have already bought over 3,000 .app domains.

With just about every common name and phrase already registered under .com, other top-level domains like .io and .fm have become more popular in recent years. Google's .app TLD is appealing not just because it has plenty of untaken phrases (at least for now), but also because it's easy to remember. Interestingly, .app sites are required to use HTTPS, which Google says is "helping move the web to an HTTPS-everywhere future in a big way."

Google has set up get.app to help you search for available domains. You'll have to wait until May 8 to buy one for yourself, but they should only cost around $20/year.

Waymo and Uber has reached a settlement in their self-driving car case. The announcement came as a big shock, even though I wrote yesterday that Waymo's case was looking oddly weak . Parties are free to settle in the middle of trial (heck, they can settle while the jury is considering a verdict, and they can settle even after the verdict is out) but it's pretty rare. For one thing, it's hard to think about negotiating when you're busy prepping for trial the next day. For another thing, if you were going to settle, you probably should have done it before. 2018 Samsung QLED TVs will be revealed on March 7

At CES 2018 , Samsung showcased its vision for TVs and other home appliances in the IoT era. Though the company showcased  'The Wall,' its first 146-inch modular MicroLED TV , and an 8K QLED TV at the event, it didn't launch any of the mainstream QLED TVs for 2018 at the event. The more mainstream SmartTVs were expected to launch at a later date. 2018 Samsung QLED TVs will feature Bixby Earlier this month, a report from Korea stated that Samsung is going to launch a new Bixby-powered TV in New York in March. In line with the news, Samsung has scheduled an event titled 'The First Look' for March 7 at the American Stock Exchange in Manhattan, New York.
