LG has unveiled the G7 ThinQ with a screen notch, AI and a Google Assistant button
After weeks of drip-feed 'leaks' of features from LG themselves, and legitimate leaks of renders and specs, the LG G7 ThinQ has been unveiled in New York.
The phone is made from a polished metal rim with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and rear covering a 19.5:9 aspect ratio 6.1″ 3120×1440 resolution LCD display which as expected features a notch. The notch can be changed to a more traditional notification bar to hide the notch, and they'll also allow users to change the colour of the notification bar.
The use of glass hasn't affected the phones durability with both IP68 dust/waterproofing and MIL-spec (STD 810G) rating.
What's under the hood? Well, the rumours have been accurate with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 running the show. The phone will come in two memory options: 4GB RAM/64GB storage or 6GB RAM/128GB storage – with both including a microSD card slot capable of using a 2TB card.
The camera specs on the LG G7 ThinQ are phenomenally good on paper with dual 16MP sensors on the rear and an 8MP Wide Angle (80°) sensor with f/1.9 aperture on the front. The sensors on the rear offer different options, with the primary offering a Super Wide Angle 107° field of view with a very respectable f/1.9 aperture, while the secondary 16MP sensor has an even better f/1.7 aperture, meaning it should be shooting excellent shots in all manner of lighting conditions.
Here's the rest:
AI
There are two stories to tell with the LG G7 ThinQ revolving around the camera and inclusion of improved Artificial Intelligence (AI). The features intermingle, with the AI CAM inclusions now featuring 19 shooting modes to recognise objects in the frame when you point the lens at them.
The camera will also benefit from Google Lens integration, that LG says will be expanded on at Google I/O next week. Lens can be called using the new Google Assistant button on the side of the phone, with a single tap of the button calling Google Assistant, while a double tap will launch Google Lens.
Audio
As expected, LG has improved the audio experience on the G7 ThinQ, with "boombox" sound that uses 'the internal space of the LG G7 ThinQ as a resonance chamber', which can also be enhanced with a virtual woofer using the resonance of wooden and metal surfaces.
The improved audio also includes DTS: X – virtual 7.1 surround sound, and of course Hi-Fi Quad DAC for incredibly rich sound.
The Google Assistant will also be able to hear you better with Super Far Field Voice Recognition (SFFVR) meaning the G7 will be able to hear you from up to five meters away, with the SFFVR able to distnguish between actual commands and background noise like the TV.
Availability
LG hasn't announced any local availability here in Australia. Their global PR team have advised that the LG G7 ThinQ will be available first in South Korea in the coming days before heading to North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia. We'll be following up with LG Australia for more local information.
