Plex Android App Gains Podcast Support, Better Customization

The Plex Android app not supports podcasts. This is actually a much more wide-reaching feature as Plex has announced its entire ecosystem is moving towards a podcast-friendly design, although as part of the initial wave of support, podcast compatibility will only be available on Android, the Plex Web, Roku, and iOS. With the promise of more platform options to support the new feature in due course. It is also worth noting this initial offering of podcast support is being released as a beta feature, and is being made available to all users – not just those with a Plex Pass.

Some of the benefits Plex is now touting with the new podcast support is the service's 'search and discovery' technology with Plex stating its interface has been designed to ensure finding a podcast is as easy as possible with users able to search by keyword, or browse through the numerous options available. Adding to this, Plex is drawing on machine learning to ensure that once a user starts searching and listening to podcasts, the interface in time will build up enough knowledge to start offering personalized recommendations. To further add to the experience, Plex states it has "upgraded" its mobile app and web players for an improved listening experience, as well as better forward and backing skipping, and support for variable speed playback. As to be expected with a Plex feature, there are some additional interface benefits offered as well, including the option to add specific ones to the home screen or the user's library, as well as the ability to access podcasts through the likes of 'On Deck.'

Plex has also announced an update to the Android app interface which in general will result in an even more personalized experience. One which Plex states adopts a more content-first approach, making it easier to not only further customize the experience, but quicker to access content. For example, a new bottom bar has now been added to the app along with primary category tabs (Home, Shows, Movies, and Music) making it easier to switch between main categories. These categories are also adjustable with the user able to rearrange the order, or remove ones which have no relevance to the user. This customization also now extends to the home screen, with the new update allowing users to add or remove a section, as well as reorder the sections shown. This is all in addition to beta multi-server support.

Apple is postponing new iOS features in favor of reliability and performance

Apple has decided to postpone new features in iOS in favor of improving the reliability and performance of the operating system, as according to a report by Axios. According to the report, Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President, Software Engineering, announced the revised plan to employees at a meeting earlier this month. This pushes features like refresh of the homescreen and in-car user interface, improvements to core apps like Mail and camera experience to 2019.
