Sony brings Google Assistant to its existing WH-1000XM2 and WI-1000X headsets

Back at CES 2018, Google made a huge splash by announcing Assistant support on every gadget and electronic imaginable. Sony was on the list, but the company did one better than many of its competitors: beside launching new headphones and headsets with Assistant, it promised an update for some of its existing products that would bring them the same feature. And now that firmware is rolling out.

With software update 2.0.0, which is rolling to both the WH-1000XM2 and WI-1000X now, the over-ear headphones and in-ear neckband earphones will both be optimized for the Google Assistant. Sure, you can already trigger Assistant on most headphones by tapping and holding the call button, but proper Assistant integration (aka "Bisto") adds some benefits: the process of push-to-talk is faster, it works with Assistant on iOS devices, and you can get notifications spoken to you on the headset.

To get it working, after updating your headset's software, you can change the noise cancellation / ambient button to trigger Google Assistant instead.

So far, the screenshots we've received show the firmware rolling to the WI-1000X and WH-1000XM2 models, but Sony had promised three more headsets would get it too: the WF-1000X, WH-CH900N, and h.ear on 2 WH-H900N. Hopefully those are coming later. In the meantime, kudos to Sony!

Instagram starts showing activity status in direct messages

... In its quest to become the only app where you share photos, moments, and messages, Instagram is adding one new feature to its direct messages: activity status. Just like you'd see when a person was last active on WhatsApp or Telegram or plenty of other messaging services, now you can do the same on Instagram and chide them for not replying with "oohs" and "aahs" to the preettay pic of a sunset that you just posted or the kissy face you messaged directly to them. Android 1.0 versus Android 9: A visual tour of how far we've come in a decade

Android has changed tremendously in the last ten years. Returning to modern hardware after our historical series , I was struck by the visual differences across versions. LG G7 ThinQ to Have Boombox-Like Sound, Feature DTS:X Immersive Audio

In typical LG fashion, we're learning more about the upcoming G7 ThinQ via official channels, even though we're 2 days away from an unveiling in NYC. This is fine with us, so long as we get a better understanding of what to expect later this week. Yesterday, LG detailed all of the different audio aspects of the device. For those who cry for dual stereo speakers, that doesn't appear to be the case on the G7 ThinQ. Instead, LG is utilizing a single speaker, but incorporating a design that's essentially an echo chamber. In LG's writeup, they call it a " Boombox speaker ," but what's actually happening is a bit more interesting.
