Word is the first Microsoft-published app to hit 500 million Play Store installs

Cloud-based services like Google Docs have replaced old-fashioned word processors for some of us, but plenty of people still want to open Microsoft Word files. So many, in fact, that Microsoft Word for Android has hit the 500 million install milestone in the Play Store. That's the first app published by Microsoft (not counting Skype) to reach that number.

For a long time, Microsoft kept its full Office apps off competing platforms like Android. When it became clear that Windows Phone wasn't working, it branched out to Android and iOS. Word is ahead of the other Office apps like Excel and PowerPoint, which are still back in the 100 million or more category. Considering how many Word files show up in my email, that's not a surprise.

The Word app is free to download, but some of the features won't work unless you have an Office 365 subscription. Paying up adds features like track changes, page breaks, headers/footers, and more. It's still a perfectly serviceable way to view and edit Word docs on your phone with just the free account.

Google Maps tests directions screen with refreshed Material Design, rolls out For You tab to 130 countries

With every few updates, Google Maps seems to walk closer and closer to a full-fledged refresh of its Material interface, helping it go along with the new direction Google is taking this year with its app design language. We've seen a new look for the main interface , an updated side menu , overhauled hotel listings , new fonts in many places throughout the app, a persistent Overview/Reviews/Photos bar on some place listings, and even an update to the look of the app on Android Auto . But over the past couple of days, one more part of the app is getting its re-looking session: Directions. For the longest time now, Google Maps has had a blue background behind the from/to directions boxes. Facebook is under fire from child health experts over its new app, Messenger Kids. In an open letter published today, co-signed by nineteen organizations and just under 100 advocates, the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood has urged Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to pull the plug on the video chat app, citing research that suggests social media can have a detrimental impact on a child’s healthy development in early life.
