Exclusive: Samsung is already working on the Galaxy Watch Active 2

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Watch Active alongside the Galaxy S10 in February this year. The fitness-focused smartwatch succeeded the Gear Sport with a new and improved design as well as enhanced functionality.

The company's wearables department is busy working on new products. We exclusively confirmed a detail about the Galaxy Watch 2 just last week. We can now confirm that there is indeed a new Galaxy Watch Active 2 in development.

Galaxy Watch Active 2 is in development

As mentioned in our Galaxy Watch Active review, we quite liked the design changes that Samsung introduced with it. The Galaxy Watch Active ditched the rotating bezel to become lighter and more compact. The end product is one that's extremely comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. Yes, the rotating bezel came in handy when navigating through the UI, but the side-swiping system UI could still easily be navigated with taps on the display.

Our sources tell us that Samsung is sticking to the same formula for the Galaxy Watch Active 2. Like its predecessor, it won't have a rotating bezel as well. This would mean that the device will retain the comfort that Galaxy Watch Active owners have become accustomed to. There may also be some additional design tweaks but you can expect the Galaxy Watch Active 2 to look largely similar to its predecessor. Samsung will obviously improve the fitness-related features as can be expected from a new upgrade.

It's not known for sure right now when Samsung is planning to release the Galaxy Watch Active 2. One could expect that to happen alongside the Galaxy Note 10 in August. However, given that the Galaxy Watch Active came out just four months ago, Samsung may not put a successor on the market just yet. Nevertheless, we'll keep an ear to the ground and let you know when more information about the Galaxy Watch Active 2 comes in.

Gear S3 frontier update patches major S Voice bug

Samsung released a much-requested update for the Gear S3 frontier on Wednesday. The upgrade has been designed to patch a major bug that resulted in S Voice crashing whenever it was toggled — and from what we can tell, it’s working. The glitch itself has been running riot since May, which is around the same time the device received a routine maintenance update , leading us to believe a faulty line of code was the reason S Voice was unable to run without breaking down. Some noticed that the performance of S Voice suffered when asking it to retrieve information from the internet, like a weather forecast, but it never crashed. Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. Google Play Points reward program is official, but only in Japan for now

... Earlier this month, Cody discovered evidence for a loyalty program  in a teardown of the Google Play app, and now we're seeing the first official word about it. The rewards scheme is called Play Points and has gone live in Japan, according to a support page for the app. Users can join the program by navigating to the 'Play Points' section in the app's hamburger menu. To begin with, one point will be awarded for every ¥100 (about $0.90) spent on apps and games — to be used on IAPs or converted to Google Play credit — but as you progress, higher levels can be achieved with even greater rewards.
