Honor Magic 2 has six cameras and a slide-up design, available November 6

Image
There's also a new Honor Watch coming out in January. During IFA this past August, Honor gave us a sneak peek at its Honor Magic 2 flagship smartphone. At an event held in Beijing today, the Magic 2 was fully unveiled alongside a new smartwatch that's debuting next year. Similar to the Oppo Find X , the Honor Magic 2 has a slide-up design in which the front-facing cameras and other sensors pop out above the 6.39-inch AMOLED display when you want to use them. This allows the Magic 2 to have "an almost 100% screen-to-body ratio" with no notch in sight, and the result is really quite beautiful. Powering the Magic 2 is Huawei's Kirin 980 processor that provides snappy day-to-day performance and "high-performance AI-computation processing power." Just like the original Honor Magic, the presence of artificial intelligence is being heavily marketed with its successor. The Magic 2 ships with its own AI called YOYO that Honor describes as follows:

Nubia X Avoids The Notch Problem By Using Two Screens

Image
Former ZTE arm Nubia introduced a brand-new smartphone in China with a couple of unusual features - a dual-screen design and two fingerprint sensors. The device known as the Nubia X fits in the flagship segment and is powered by appropriate hardware components such as the Snapdragon 845 chipset from Qualcomm, paired with 6GB or 8GB of RAM. Nevertheless, despite having doubled the number of screens and fingerprint sensors compared to most other flagship phones, the Nubia X is available for purchase in China for the starting price of 3,299 Yuan ($473). Most importantly, this device seems to be the OEM's solution to the polarizing display notch design. Nubia is not a stranger to challenging itself with unique design features and the latest Nubia X surely stands apart from most other devices on the market. Although there have been other dual-screen handsets like the YotaPhone series, these particular models launched by the Russian OEM combined an IPS LCD or AMOLED display with an alwa

How the Apple Watch changed the world

Image
In 2015 Switzerland was fucked. This blunt belief, grunted out by Apple's Jony Ive and repeated by the media as a death knell for the watch industry, seemed to define a sad truth: that the Swiss watch was dead and Apple pulled the trigger. Now, three years and four Apple Watches later , was Ive right? Did Apple change the world? And, most importantly, did Switzerland survive? Yes, but… As you might have noticed the Swiss watch industry is still standing. The major Swiss houses – LVMH, Richemont, and Swatch Group – are seeing a major uptick in sales, especially in the US. According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry , sales are up 5.5% year-over-year, a bit of news that was, amusingly, almost buried by the onslaught of Apple Watch Series 4 reviews. This increase of US sales bucked a major trend this year and one market insider, who preferred to remained anonymous, noted that all of his sales contacts are seeing increased sales in the $3,000 and above watch categ

2018 Material Design Award winners announced, all featuring unique Material Themes

LG will unveil its foldable smartphone during CES 2019

Image
Clearly, next year's big thing will be foldable devices and LG wants in. Samsung promised to announce its flexible Galaxy phone soon, but its local rival might even beat it. According to the latest tweet from Evan Blass LG is looking to unveil its revolutionary smartphone at its own keynote at CES 2019. I can't speak for Samsung... ...but I do know that LG plans to unveil a foldable phone at its 2019 CES keynote. — Evan Blass (@evleaks) October 31, 2018 Going by the patent that got approved by the US Patent and Trademark Office in late 2017, the smartphone will most likely fold horizontally - the way the foldable Galaxy would . Rumor has it, LG already has plans to supply Lenovo and Dell with its foldable OLED panels for the making of flexible tablets, which is technically more difficult than a small-sized smartphone panel. So it only makes sense that LG is ready or at least is getting ready for a full-blown flexible smartphone. And given the track reco

Samsung’s AR Emoji feature isn’t optimized enough for budget and mid-range phones

Image
Samsung has been quite serious about bringing new camera features from its latest flagships to existing devices. AR Emoji, which debuted on the Galaxy S9, is now supported on the Galaxy S8 , Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy A8 Star, and the Galaxy A7, just to name a few. It also made its way Samsung's budget lineup with an update to the Galaxy J7 Duo , and we can rest assured we will see AR Emoji on new Galaxy devices across various segments in the coming months. I just hope Samsung plans to optimize AR Emoji to make it less cumbersome than it is at the moment. AR Emoji has too much lag and stutter On the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9, AR Emoji works great. It doesn't work great in terms of how well the emojis it creates look like your real self, because it's only a software trick that doesn't take long enough to make realistic digital avatars of the user. But the process of creating AR Emojis is a quick affair on the S9 and Note 9, with even real-time mapping possible. On de

Google Pixel 3 review

Image
Introduction Bringing the small Pixel into the now with a tall display and less wasted space, we have this year's Google Pixel 3. Updated glass build and a couple of selfie cameras mark the other key changes compared to the 2017 vintage. This being Google's hardware vehicle for Google's own software, the Pixel 3 comes with the latest Pie OS, almighty Assistant, and a main camera that makes up with machine learning and math for what it lacks in specs - an actual second module. Google's aversion to the specs race continues and the Pixel 3 is one of few top-end handsets to make do with just 4GB of RAM and the 128GB storage maximum is where some current models start at. No memory card slot either - instead, it offers you unlimited cloud storage for a few years to come. Neat, but not quite the same thing, we reckon. The Snapdragon 845 goes without saying, and as with RAM, Google's taken a conservative approach - clock speeds are lower than what you'd fi

Starbucks for Android simplified with bottom bar redesign

Image
Back in August, Starbucks for Android added the ability to reload your points-earning Starbucks Card with Google Pay. Starbucks 5.0 is now rolling out a bottom bar that cleans up and simplifies the app. Starbucks 5.0.1 features a five-tab bottom bar that provides quick access to Home, Cards, Order, Gift, and Stores. These sections were previously housed in a navigation drawer that has since been removed. While there were several more sections previously in that drawer, Starbucks has consolidated some of the elements and cut down on duplication. Your order History and deals Inbox are available at the top of the app, while settings is available to the right. Version 5.0 alters the FAB from a circular shape to an oval one. Instead of just noting your remaining balance it adds the word "Pay" in front to be more apparent. Meanwhile, tapping "use" brings up options to "Order" and "Add money." Clicking now immediately opens your card for

Poll: Do You Care About Foldable Phones?

Image
At Samsung's Developer Conference next week, we should finally see some sort of rendering or prototype of their years-in-the-making foldable phone. It'll probably just be a phone that folds out into a tablet (which is fine), but it's clear that the next big move from companies is going to be a push into folding sh*t. LG is about to . Other companies too. I can't tell if anyone cares, though. We write up these rumors and the response is mostly crickets. Is it because all of the big new ideas from companies almost never stick or are too gimmicky and people are hesitant to get overhyped? Maybe. The hype sure was huge for things like Android tablets, smartwatches, DeX-like systems, smart glasses, VR, etc. yet none of them has really turned into a very big deal on Android. One of the few things that companies have delivered on in recent years is bigger displays in smaller phones. Well, that was great until they started throwing notches onto everything, but I digress.

Mate 20 Pro beats Huawei’s pre-order sales record in Western Europe by 40%

Image
Huawei launched its new flagship, the Mate 20 Pro , at an event in London on October 16th, and it seems that the Mate 10 Pro's successor is breaking pre-order records in Western Europe. Huawei's Consumer Business Group (CBG) has announced that the Mate 20 Pro, with its trio of rear cameras, OLED display, and Kirin 980 processor, has beaten previous records for pre-order sales by an impressive 40%.  The 40% uptick in preorders means that the Mate 20 Pro has overtaken the impressive P20 Pro in the number of pre-orders placed during the first ten days after being launched. While Huawei hasn't revealed specific numbers, the 40% increase is a big number to consider. Besides the fact that the Mate 20 Pro is a phone filled with high-tech features, Huawei has also upped its game concerning preorder promotions such as the one in the UK that saw the device bundled with a wireless charger as well as the company's new smartwatch, the Watch GT. This means that people who pl

Spotify Premium for Family account holders can snag a free Google Home Mini starting November 1

Image
Spotify has announced a new promotion for members with family accounts. Starting tomorrow, November 1, the master account holder on any Spotify Premium for Family plan in the United States can get a Google Home Mini for the low low price of zero dollars. The Google Home Mini's speaker isn't particularly robust, but you can have it play music from Spotify on a paired Bluetooth speaker or any cast-enabled device. And even if you don't have those things, it's hard to quibble with the sound quality of your free smart speaker. Spotify points out that its family plan is for up to six people, and Google Home can recognize up to six voices with Voice Match, providing access to everybody's account. A happy coincidence! The deal is available to "New and existing Premium for Family plan master account holders" starting tomorrow through the end of the year. I can hear you wondering if you can sign up for a single month of service to get a Home Mini for

Opinion: Leave It To Facebook To Make Smart Speakers Even Creepier

Image
Between the Google+ privacy scandal and the company's new hardware devices, as well as the Huawei Mate 20 and OnePlus 6T announcements and everything else that happened over the course of this month, you almost missed the fact that Facebook recently did something unsurprising-but-still-incredibly-surprising; as it turns out, all those reports about the company working on a smart speaker lineup were correct . The jokes write themselves - the company that's been in the middle of some of the biggest user data leaks ever — many of which happened just this year — now wants to put a camera in your house and mic it up. The firm whose co-founder and CEO routinely has to remind the general public that his company technically isn't "a surveillance organization," that was abused by foreign actors seeking to polarize the American public and influence its democratic process, as well as meddle with the dealings of other countries, a company whose entire business model liv

What’s the best place to buy the RED Hydrogen One?

Image
Best answer: You can buy the Hydrogen One from AT&T, Verizon, or unlocked directly from RED, but only AT&T offers a bundle with two free movies optimized for 4V playback. AT&T: RED Hydrogen One ($1295) Carrier support If you're a cinema aficionado who just can't resist the temptation of the RED brand name, the Hydrogen One is finally available to purchase starting this Friday, November 2nd. At a whopping $1295, it's certainly not cheap, but it's the most affordable RED product yet, save for a few camera accessories like cables and batteries. Both Verizon and AT&T will be carrying the Hydrogen One, offering different payment plans to make the phone easier to walk out with. Of course, you'll still end up paying the full $1295 over time regardless, but Verizon has 24-month financing for $53.95 per month. AT&T, on the other hand, will let you get away with $43.17 a month, but the financing period is stretched out to 30 months.
