Samsung Galaxy M31 specs reveal two expected upgrades

Like the Galaxy A series phones Samsung launched this year, devices in the budget Galaxy M lineup will also be getting sequels in the coming year. It was only two weeks ago that we exclusively revealed that Samsung is working on the Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M31, and the latter has already made its way into the Geekbench benchmark database. It turns out that the Galaxy M31 will bring a couple of expected upgrades over the Galaxy M30.

Revealed Galaxy M31 specs don't offer any surprises

The first of those is the processor. The Exynos 7904 that powers the M30 is being replaced by an Exynos 9611 on the M31. It's not the most powerful chip, but it's the one Samsung has been using in all of its lower mid-range devices recently, such as the Galaxy M30s and the newly announced Galaxy A51. The benchmarked unit had 6GB of RAM, but there's likely to be a variant with only 4GB of RAM as well. There will be a minimum of 64GB of storage, as we had revealed in our earlier report.

The second upgrade is the version of Android: The Galaxy M31 has been benchmarked with Android 10. Samsung has finally stopped launching phones with outdated software, so the M31 running Android 10 out of the box won't come as a surprise. The Galaxy M30 has already been updated to Android 10, but since it came with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, it's unlikely to get Android 11. The Galaxy M31, meanwhile, should go on to get updated till Android 12.

Other than the specs revealed by the benchmark, nothing is known about the Galaxy M31. It's likely to have upgraded cameras, and we can imagine it will get the same sensors as those on the Galaxy M30s. Whether it will also have a macro camera like the one on the Galaxy A51 remains to be seen. An Infinity-O display can be expected as well, given Samsung's push for a consistent design language across devices that it's going to launch in the coming year.
