Samsung no longer EU’s biggest R&D spender, dethroned by Alphabet

Samsung Electronics was no longer Europe's top R&D spender in 2018. It held the top spot in 2017 but lost the crown to Alphabet – Google's parent company – according to a recent report from Yonhap News Agency citing the European Union Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard.

Samsung didn't spend any less than it did in 2017

Despite Samsung losing its top spot as the biggest R&D spender in the EU, the company spent 10% more on R&D in 2018 than it did a year before. Samsung isn't slowing down its spendings, and it poured a total of 14.8 billion EUR into R&D throughout the year. However, Alphabet spent 18.3 billion EUR, representing a 37% increase from a year earlier.

Samsung spent more money on research & development than numerous other corporations including Volkswagen, Apple, Huawei, Microsoft, and Intel. The list of top 50 R&D spenders contained a total of 22 companies based in the United States.

As reported not long ago, Samsung Electronics has remained South Korea's biggest R&D spender in 2018 and has continued to pour money into research and development throughout 2019 as well. In June, the company was reported to have 132,478 patents under its belt, 20% of which were registered in Europe.

Google Pixel 3 Teardown: Adhesive secures battery, different OLED panel

The Google Pixel 3 XL Teardown by iFixit we featured yesterday revealed the bigger variant offers a whole lot of glue and is a bit challenging to disassemble and repair. We were surprised by the AMOLED screen as it was made by Samsung–one of its biggest rivals. The smartphone isn't exactly our top choice right now but the premium flagship has potential. It has a smaller variant, the standard Pixel 3, that comes without a notch and obviously wide forehead and chin. The Pixel 3 teardown shouldn't be any different from the Google Pixel 3 XL teardown but iFixit was curious if the display is the same. The team opened the new Pixel and discovered the panel is from LG. That's an interesting fact because last year, the Pixel 2 XL had used a display from LG while the vanilla Pixel 2 screen was from Samsung. Samsung and SK Telecom link 4G and 5G networks for the first time

Samsung has teamed up with South Korea’s major mobile carrier SK Telecom to demonstrate the communication between 4G and 5G networks for the first time in the industry. Samsung has said that the demonstration went off without any disruptions and that clear streaming was enabled between the two networks. The two companies were successful in linking the long-term evolution network that uses the 2.6 GHz frequency band with the 5G network that uses the 28 GHz and 3.5 GHz frequency band. This will pave the way for 4G and 5G users to communicate even when there’s no nationwide 5G infrastructure. “Along with the 5G network’s 3.5 GHz frequency band that provides a wider coverage, and the 28 GHz frequency band that enables ultrahigh-speed transmission, the connection with the 4G network will help users enjoy the best communications services anywhere without disruptions,” said SK Telecom.
