AT&T now rolling out June security update for the Galaxy Note 4

AT&T has started rolling out this month’s security maintenance release (SMR), which includes 96 fixes for Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android operating system and 23 additional patches for Galaxy-branded smartphones, for its carrier-branded variant of the Galaxy Note 4 in the United States. Related content:  Samsung highlights contents of June security patch The upgrade is being distributed in stages. To check to see if it’s ready for your handset, open up Settings , then select the relevant option from the Software Update subheading. We should point out, however, that if your device doesn’t have at least 50 percent of battery, you won’t be able to install the firmware.

Samsung launches a Rose Pink color variant of the Galaxy S8+ in Taiwan

Image
Samsung will launch a Rose Pink color variant of the Galaxy S8+ in Taiwan next month. The handset will be priced at TW 27,900 ($920) and will only be available for a short period of time, before disappearing from the firm’s online store. Obviously the changes are purely cosmetic, meaning this particular variant of the Galaxy S8+ will continue to feature a 6.2-inch Infinity Display, an in-house Exynos 8895 processor, a 12MP rear-facing camera, an 8MP front-facing camera and a 3,500mAh Li-Ion battery. This news comes shortly after Samsung made the decision  to rebrand the Coral Blue, Maple Gold and Orchid Grey color variants of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ for the Taiwanese market to Ice Lake Blue, Smoked Purple Grey, and Quicksand Gold. It’s unclear whether the company is planning on bringing the Rose Pink version of the Galaxy S8+ to other regions — but we’re hoping it is. After all, it needs to keep selling units, and releasing new colors is one of the best ways of doing so.

Galaxy S8 sales surpass 1.3 million in South Korea

Samsung has announced that sales of its flagship  Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in South Korea recently surpassed the 1.3 million mark, with around 11,000 to 12,000 customers purchasing a unit every day, which is the highest figure ever recorded in the region. On Monday, it was also revealed that the firm had set another record: its share price rose to 2.41 million won ($2,120). Obviously, that isn’t only the result of the Galaxy S8  taking the market by storm, but it’s definitely playing a big part in its success. In an effort to maintain momentum, Samsung will reportedly release two more color variants of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ — Blue Coral and Pink Gold — in the region in July, and aims to launch the Galaxy Note FE shortly after to bolster sales. Galaxy J7 (2017) to launch in the US as the Galaxy Halo

The Galaxy J7 (2017) will launch on Cricket Wireless in the United States as the Galaxy Halo, according to reliable tipster Evan Blass. There’s no word on whether the handset will sport any changes on the inside, but it looks like there are a number of cosmetic differences, including a redesigned camera configuration. It’s safe to assume that the Galaxy Halo will be available in four colors — black, blue, gold and pink — and will carry a price tag of approximately $380 when it hits the shelves later this year. Samsung took the number-two spot in the wearable market for Q1 of 2017

Samsung was the second-largest global wearable vendor during the first quarter of this year with a total market share of 12.8 percent, reports  The Korea Herald . However, that figure doesn’t seem half as impressive when you take into account that Apple topped the table with an eye-watering share of 53 percent. As you’d expect, the Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier made up the majority of Samsung’s sales during the January-March period, though several promotions, which include awarding a free  Gear Fit 2 to every customer who picked up a Galaxy S7 after the Galaxy S8 hit the shelves, also contributed to the firm’s success. The main reason customers have been picking up the Gear S3 frontier , and now the Gear S3 classic, instead of the Apple Watch is because they feature cellular capabilities — so users can leave their phone at home and still receive phone calls and text messages on their wrist.

Galaxy Note 8 will cost more than $1,000 when it launches in September

Samsung will launch the much-anticipated Galaxy Note 8  in September, according to  VentureBeat.  The handset is expected to carry an eye-watering price tag of €999 ($1,120), earning it the title of the firm’s most expensive smartphone to date. As far as software goes, the Galaxy Note 8 will ship

Galaxy S8 Tip: Get faster iris scanning with one simple change

Image
The Galaxy S8 is the only Samsung flagship on the market right now that has an iris scanner. The feature is great for controlling access to the device and also for services like Samsung Pass where the user can rely on iris scanning to authenticate their credentials . You first have to configure your iris data which is stored in a secure enclave on the device itself and never synced to Samsung’s servers. One the feature is turned on you can rely on it to control access to your Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+. The way this feature works is that you first have to turn the screen on when you pick up your device and then swipe up on the screen for the iris scanner to start scanning. It literally takes less than a second from there for the scanner to do its thing. It’s possible for you to get faster iris scanning with just one simple change. It eliminates the need to swipe up on the screen when it’s turned on. The iris scanner starts scanning as soon as the screen is turned on. Step 1: On you

Tizen 4.0 first milestone release breaks new ground for the Internet of Things

Image
The first milestone of Tizen 4.0 was released a couple of weeks ago and it marked a turning point for the platform. Samsung points out that Tizen is the “most successful Linux-based embedded OS in the world.” Tizen 4.0 was developed to invigorate the app ecosystem by making the development experience easier and to build a robust device ecosystem so that any device manufacturer can create their own Internet of Things product. To break new ground for the Internet of Things, Samsung closely worked with partners to improve the IoT-readiness, updatability and configurability of Tizen 4.0. As a result of these efforts, Tizen has been restructured significantly. The previous version of Tizen only supported defined devices like TVs and smartphones. Samsung has configured Tizen 4.0 to support various devices without needing OEMs to build new projects and infrastructure for each type of device. What this means is that device vendors can now configure and prototype an operating system for th

Samsung’s new $300 million US factory may be announced next week

It was first reported earlier this year that Samsung was thinking about setting up an appliance factory in the United States after the 2016 election elevated Donald Trump to the country’s highest office. The president has vowed to amend the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) so that the United States can charge hefty tax on products that are manufactured in Mexico for sale in the US. Samsung appliances sold in the US are currently manufactured at the company’s plant in Mexico so you can see why it may want to move production. A recent report suggested that Samsung’s new appliance factory in the United States was going to cost $300 million and that it was going to be based in South Carolina . According to a new report, a formal announcement about this could be made as early as next week. The Wall Street Journal reports that Samsung will be moving into a factory that will soon be vacated by Caterpillar. The factory is located in Newberry, South Carolina. The company reported

Galaxy S8 Active specs surface yet again

Samsung is due to release an “Active” variant of the Galaxy S8 in the near future. The handset was recently referenced on Samsung’s own website which is a big indication that it’s coming soon. The company may not have confirmed anything about this handset so far but it’s not like the Galaxy S8 Active’s specs haven’t been making the rounds. The Galaxy S8 Active has been spotted at a popular benchmarking website where it has revealed its specifications yet again. The latest listing reiterates that the Galaxy S8 Active will feature an Exynos 8895 processor with 4GB of RAM. Previous Active handsets have had larger batteries so that remains a possibility for the Galaxy S8 Active as well. It’s also believed that the Galaxy S8 Active is going to have a 5.8-inch AMOLED display that’s not curved. Samsung will opt for this panel in the interest of durability as the handset is reportedly going to be compliant with the MIL-STD-810G standard. Other than that, expect all of the specs to be sim

Samsung launches Galaxy Folder 2 flip phone in South Korea

There aren’t a lot of manufacturers out there that are still making flip phones but Samsung is doing its part to keep the trend alive by launching a new device every now and then. The company launched the Galaxy Folder 2 ten months back and the handset has only been available in China since then. Samsung today announced that the Galaxy Folder 2 will now be available in South Korea. The Galaxy Folder 2 is basically a mid-range Android handset in a clamshell form factor. Galaxy S5 Neo Nougat update possibly being tested

Image
Samsung launched a new variant of the Galaxy S5 over two years ago called the Galaxy S5 Neo . It had a different processor and support for LTE-A. The Galaxy S5 Neo featured a 5.1-inch 1920×1020 pixel resolution display with a 1.6GHz octa-core Exynos 7580 processor. The handset featured 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, a 2,800mAh battery and a 16-megapixel rear camera. The company doesn’t appear to have ceased firmware development for this device as just three months ago, a new firmware update was released for the Galaxy S5 Neo which brought the March security patch for this handset, even though countless more recent handsets hadn’t even received the February patch by then. The Galaxy S5 Neo (SM-G903) has now been spotted on GFXBench. The benchmark listing for the device tested reveals that it was running Android 7.0 Nougat. This strongly indicates that Samsung may be testing the Nougat update for this device. However, it’s unclear if and when the company is planning to release it.

Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) hands-on

Image
The recent launch of the revamped Galaxy J (2017) series marks a significant event in the development of Samsung’s hardware design. Though some markets already saw the launch of similarly built devices late last year (check our Galaxy J7 Prime review , for example) most Western buyers will only get their hands on Samsung’s new premium Galaxy J lineup in the coming weeks. I’ve got my hands on the first device of the series to be launched, the Galaxy J5 (2017), and will now share a few quick first impressions. Galaxy J5 (2017) hands-on: Build quality After many years of repeated ridicule over its cheap choice of materials, it is safe to say the Galaxy J5 (2017) proves Samsung has learned from the past. While it is easy to see progress in expensive flagship devices like the Galaxy S8 , the arrival of a full metal body in the much more affordable Galaxy J series is perhaps an even more significant landmark. After all, Samsung expects to sell one hundred million of these units  this yea

The Galaxy J5 (2017) is directly available in the Netherlands today and the release coincides with the rollout of the first firmware update for this handset. The update that’s rolling out now brings the June security patch for the Galaxy J5 (2017). The Galaxy J5 (2017) has a nice metal body, it’s powered by a 1.6GHz processor coupled with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage. Samsung is actually rolling out this firmware version J530FXXU1AQF5 in several countries across Europe where the handset has been released. It’s a minor update in that it weighs in at just 23MB and don’t bring any new features, but then again, the Galaxy J5 (2017) is already running Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. It’s a good sign that the company is quick to release the latest security patch for this handset. Samsung is committed to rolling ou

Samsung releases Bixby Voice preview for Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+

Image
Samsung announced last week that it will conduct a preview program in the United States to test Bixby Voice before the much-awaited feature is released for everyone. It invited Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners in the country to register for the preview. They would get the update if they were selected as part of the beta group. Some users who had signed up for the preview are now reporting that they’re received the Bixby Voice update for their handsets. They are now able to make full use of the Bixby button on their devices as the preview brings Bixby Voice functionality which was previously limited to users in South Korea. It’s not surprising that Bixby Voice preview is being rolled out today given that Samsung has recently been sending out app updates to alL Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners that appear to be setting the stage for its new voice assistant. Samsung claims that Bixby Voice enables users to do everything that they can do with a tap on the display with just a voice comma

Samsung reportedly acquired VR app studio VRB for $5.5 million

It’s no secret that Samsung is very serious about its position in the virtual reality market . The company already has a great suite of products that enable users to experience virtual reality. It has also been inking new partnerships to bring more content to its VR platform. That’s not all the company is working on in this space. According to a new report , Samsung has acquired VRB rather quietly. VRB is a startup based in New York that has already developed apps for capturing and viewing 360-degree virtual reality content. The scribe’s sources suggest that Samsung paid $5.5 million for this company. No official statement has been released by Samsung or VRB to confirm the acquisition. One of the co-founders of the company, Chrisopher Paretti confirmed the sale to TechCrunch , adding that “VRB was acquired by Samsung, but the deal amount will remain undisclosed.” The report is light on details concerning Samsung’s vision for this company and what it intends to do with its talent an

One of our readers reached out to us after seeing several Bixby updates being pushed to his device. His device received updates for the Bixby service as well as its Wakeup, PLM and Global Action modules. You may recall that Samsung launched a beta program for Bixby Voice a few days back. It’s giving Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners in the United States the change to register and be selected in the group of users who will be given early access to all of Bixby’s features. It would be the first time that anyone outside Samsung gets to test how well Bixby Voice handles the English language. Samsung has not yet confirmed when it plans on rolling out Bixby to all users in the Uni

SamMobile Daily Recap: June 21, 2017 — Galaxy S8, Gear VR (2017) and more!

We publish  a lot  of stories on a daily basis. However, we think we’ve come up with a fantastic solution — a  daily recap . Here’s what we covered today. The Gear VR may soon be able to identify users based on their head shape

Image
A patent has surfaced highlighting a new feature that is set to make its way to the Gear VR . According to the sketches, Samsung has devised a way to arm the headset with the ability to identify a user based on the shape of their face and head by recording the amount of pressure that’s applied to the bonds holding the unit in place. At present, it’s not possible to unlock your smartphone using the Gear VR — so you have to remove it to enter your PIN. However, with this feature, the handset should automatically unlock when it detects that it’s being worn by a registered user, which should alleviate a lot of frustration from current owners. We should probably point out that there’s a pretty good chance this technology will never see the light of day. As you’re probably already aware, Samsung reserves the rights to a lot of designs and names on a daily basis, and only a small portion of them ever make their way onto the market. Could this be one of the few that do? We think so. Via

Samsung ditching in-screen fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy Note 8

Samsung was originally rumored to be thinking about debuting an in-screen fingerprint sensor with the Galaxy S8 but that didn’t happen. The company reportedly decided against the idea as the technology wasn’t ready so it simply repositioned the fingerprint sensor at the back. It has since been rumored that the Galaxy Note 8 will be the first smartphone from Samsung to feature a fingerprint sensor that’s integrated into the display itself . However, there have been many reports recently that sing a different tune. The latest out of South Korea claims that Samsung is likely going to give up on the in-screen fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy Note 8 due to technical challenges. The company is reportedly having a hard time making an integrated circuit that will be placed under the display to read the fingerprint image off of the display’s surface. Samsung is also said to be facing issues with production yields and securing the transparency of the sensor. Another report suggested that un

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 review: A great tablet that should have been better

Image
With the Galaxy Tab S3, Samsung completes a surprising merger of the Note series with its AMOLED display-toting Tab S lineup. The result is certainly a very premium-looking high-end device, with a unique combination of specs and features. However, the question remains whether all of this justifies its steep price, and what audience Samsung is targeting. In this review, we answer these questions. Design If you put the Galaxy Tab S3 next to its predecessor, the Tab S2, and look at them from the front, you’ll need a pair of eagle eyes to spot the differences. Still, once in hand, the difference becomes clear. The Tab S3 does away with the soft-touch plastic of the S2 and is now fully wrapped in metal and glass. The device is very well crafted, with rounded corners and no sharp edges. The tablet feels like one solid slab of technology. This time around, the frame houses four speakers, so you can enjoy stereo sound no matter how you’re holding the Tab S3. Just like on the Galaxy S8, the
