Google Co-Founder Sees AI & Crypto As Computing Catalysts

Google Co-Founder and Alphabet President Sergey Brin put out his annual founder's letter pertaining to the concluded business of 2017 and what to look forward to, having written that artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency are the two largest factors that are now catalyzing continued innovation in the computing space. His letter centers not just on Alphabet and Google, but on the larger tech sphere, how it's developing, and Alphabet's role in that ongoing process. According to Brin, Alphabet's main role is to continue finding innovative use cases for AI that genuinely benefit mankind, as has been done with Google Search, Waymo, and related tech efforts.

Brin spoke excitedly about Google's experiments in quantum computing. The company is currently developing a 72-qubit quantum computer, which offers a theoretical level of computing power that millions of conventional computers working together could not match. Taking the company's name and history into account, Brin noted that the Intel Pentium II processors used by Google in its first year of operation were capable of 100 million floating point operations per second, whereas the company's specially-made TPU processors can put out 180 trillion floating point operations per second. On quantum computing, he said that the company would need to build a 333-qubit system to live up to its name and provide a boost in power versus the Pentium 2 on the order of a googol. He went on to talk about safety and ethics in modern computing, as well as the fact that Alphabet will have to structure its products with global sensibilities in mind going forward in order to continue growing at the pace it has for the past few years.

Alphabet and Google have played a very large role in the contemporary evolution of technology and how it's become a well-integrated part of everyday life, and if this founder's letter is any indication, that trend will continue for the foreseeable future. Ventures like Project Wing, Sidewalk Labs, and DeepMind promise to find more uses for cutting-edge technologies than ever before and advance the welfare of mankind at large while they're at it, logically following on the original mission of Google on a scale to match its growth.

Apple is postponing new iOS features in favor of reliability and performance

Apple has decided to postpone new features in iOS in favor of improving the reliability and performance of the operating system, as according to a report by Axios. According to the report, Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President, Software Engineering, announced the revised plan to employees at a meeting earlier this month. This pushes features like refresh of the homescreen and in-car user interface, improvements to core apps like Mail and camera experience to 2019. What we will get this year is improvements to AR, digital health and parental controls. Apart from that, the OS will largely feature improvements to performance and user experience.
