Samsung Bringing Android 8.0 Oreo To Galaxy S7 Next Month

Following a recent report suggesting that the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Samsung Galaxy S7 series may have been pushed back by a month or so, the OEM recently shed more light on its update plans for the lineup by issuing a notice via the Samsung Members app in South Korea, confirming that it is working on bringing Android Oreo for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge by mid-May, at least assuming that no issues will be found with the firmware by then. As such, there's no exact rollout date in sight at present and the current timeframe is subject to change, though previous rumors hinted at a possible May 18 OTA release.

To date, Samsung brought the Android Oreo update to the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 series, and the Galaxy Note 7 FE (Fan Edition) in South Korea. Chronologically speaking, the Galaxy S7 series should be next in line for the update, but it shouldn't be the only series to receive the Oreo treatment in the coming weeks. In the same notice recently issued by Samsung, the OEM also reminded its customers that the Galaxy A5 (2017), Galaxy A7 (2017), as well as both the Wi-Fi and LTE versions of the Galaxy Tab S3 are being planned to make the jump to Oreo within the first half of the year, but the Galaxy S7 lineup is now apparently being prioritized.

As yet it's unclear what new changes will be introduced with Android Oreo for the Galaxy S7 series, though the package is likely to include Samsung's latest version of its proprietary Android implementation, Samsung Experience 9.0, which is currently available on the new Galaxy S9 lineup, as well as the Galaxy S8 series post-Oreo. Newer security patches should also be part of the update, along with performance and battery optimizations. As usual, the rollout will take place in phases and South Korea will likely be among the first countries to receive the update once it's ready to be released.

Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. ARCore apps are now available for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in China

Google's ARCore apps can now run on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in China. The apps are available in the Xiaomi App Store through a partnership with Google. A tweet from the Google AR & VR Twitter account announced the news today, although the exact ARCore apps that are now compatible with the Mi Mix 2S were not named. Google did say in the tweet that more partners for ARCore are coming soon. The Mi Mix 2S is the first phone from the manufacturer to support ARCore. Some OnePlus 6Ts have an issue with waves of static on the display

Based on a handful of reports on the OnePlus product forums, some 6T owners have run into a problem with their phone's display in which a pixelated sort of "wave" or pulse of bright colors travels up or down the screen. A reliable trigger can't seem to be found, but for those that are affected, it appears to happen more often on the lock screen while using either OnePlus' face recognition or the in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone.
