Samsung isn’t the only one making curved displays for smartphones

Samsung is the currently the leading manufacturer of curved display panels for smartphones, and a lot of brands have started using curved displays in their flagship smartphones. However, the South Korean electronics giant now has a new competitor in the segment.

Japan Display Inc. (JDI), a joint venture between Hitachi, Sony, and Toshiba, has revealed an LCD panel that can be bent like OLED displays from Samsung and LG. This has been achieved by replacing glass backing by a plastic one on both sides of the liquid crystal layer. Although JDI’s newest “Full Active Flex” 1080p LCD panels aren’t as thin or flexible as OLED panels, they could be used in smartphones that have curved edge displays.

JDI claims that it has launch partners for its bendable LCD panels, but the company hasn’t named anyone specifically. It appears that Full Active Flex LCD panels are a lot cheaper than their OLED counterparts, so you can expect them in cheaper smartphones. It is being rumored that all the OLED suppliers, including Samsung, couldn’t Apple’s needs (at least until 2018), and Apple could use a curved LCD display from JDI for its upcoming iPhones.

Samsung to build a P3 ‘total semiconductor factory’ in Pyeongtaek by 2021

It hasn't been long since Samsung completed the construction of its P2 semiconductor plant in Pyeongtaek, but now, the company is preparing to build its 3rd 'P3' semiconductor factory in the same city in the Gyeonggi Province. According to reports from the local media , Samsung wants to start constructing the P3 plant in September and make it fully operational by the end of 2021. The P3 plant will reportedly be 300 meters longer than the existing P2 plant, topping a total of 700 meters in length. Constructing the building itself should take roughly a year, and a few additional months will be needed to install the necessary equipment and ready it for mass production. Sony Announces Smaller Digital Paper E-Ink Writing Tablet

Sony has now announced a smaller follow-up to last year's Digital Paper E-ink writing tablet, the DPT-RP1. That's according to a new announcement made today via Sony's official blog. The new tablet – also dubbed with Digital Paper branding but sold under the model number DPT-CP1 – seems to be the same basic design as the previous model. However, while that earlier device was sized as close as possible to A4 paper with a 13.3-inch display, the new model drops to A5 with a 10.3-inch display. That should make its use much easier under a wider number of circumstances since it will arguably be easier to hold in one hand while writing with the other.  However, there will certainly be other benefits as well.
