Android P feature spotlight: Charging sounds finally work with wired USB chargers

There's little worse than going to pick up your phone when you need it, only to find out that it's not charged. And even when we're making our best efforts to keep our batteries topped-up, all it takes is a loose cable, or someone accidentally unplugging a power strip, for those good intentions to go to waste. Thankfully, Android P is introducing a new audio confirmation to give you a little peace of mind that your phone is charging as intended.

Prior to Android P, Google did include an option for "Charging sounds" under Settings > Sound > Advanced. While that sure gives the impression that activating it would produce an alert whenever you charge your phone, the not-quite-intuitive reality of the situation was that the charging-alert sound effect would only be triggered when using a wireless charger.

It definitely makes sense why you'd want a little extra confirmation that everything's lined up just right when working with a sometimes-finicky wireless charger. But even as we appreciated that feedback, we still wondered if Android would ever do the same for regular, wired charging.

With this week's preview of Android P, we can finally confirm that charging sounds are now functional when using a wired USB charger.

Sure, you could always just look at your phone's screen when using a wired charger to verify that everything was working as intended, but having this audio cue is a really nice, effortless extension of that.

Even without thinking too much about it, or squinting to check that your battery icon is showing its lightning bolt, you still get positive feedback that your phone is juicing up as intended and will be fully-powered and ready to go when you need it.

2018 Samsung QLED TVs will be revealed on March 7

At CES 2018 , Samsung showcased its vision for TVs and other home appliances in the IoT era. Though the company showcased  'The Wall,' its first 146-inch modular MicroLED TV , and an 8K QLED TV at the event, it didn't launch any of the mainstream QLED TVs for 2018 at the event. The more mainstream SmartTVs were expected to launch at a later date. 2018 Samsung QLED TVs will feature Bixby Earlier this month, a report from Korea stated that Samsung is going to launch a new Bixby-powered TV in New York in March. In line with the news, Samsung has scheduled an event titled 'The First Look' for March 7 at the American Stock Exchange in Manhattan, New York.
