Google Tasks might be getting an overhaul

Google Tasks, the long-neglected to-do list function buried in Gmail, might be getting a fresh face. A tipster tells us Google has uploaded new Tasks-related assets and set up new URLs for the service.

There are plenty of third-party apps and browser extensions that aim to make using Tasks a more palatable experience, but the official version is looking pretty old-school, and not in a good way:

According to our tipster, an updated web app is on the way, as evidenced by the behavior of the new URL, tasks.google.com. Google's older web app URLs handle Chrome user profiles differently than its modern apps; whereas old apps appended the app URL with the identifier ?authuser=# to differentiate between profiles, newer ones use the shorter u/#/. To wit, trying to access tasks.google.com/?authuser=1 will redirect you to tasks.google.com/u/1/ (go ahead, try it). This same redirect behavior can be observed in Google's up-to-date web apps, like Google+ and Gmail.

We also have a new icon for the service—a stylized white-and-yellow check mark very much in line with Google's modern design aesthetic:

While we weren't able to independently verify the origin of this new icon, we are reasonably confident in its authenticity.

Google Tasks doesn't currently have an official Android app or integrate with the reminders users can set via Google Assistant. It's unclear whether a future update to the service will change that.

FlexPai Foldable Device Makes Me Feel Old and Grouchy

2018 was all about the notch. It seems 2019 may be all about folds , and for some odd reason, looking at foldable devices makes me feel like a cranky old man. You see, a device called  FlexPai was recently showcased at what appears to be an overseas industry event, and just like we imagined, it can bend, fold, and do all sorts of crazy things. But is it really necessary? That's what I can't figure out. While I get the concept just fine, with what's essentially a 4″ display folding into a 7.8″ display for consuming content, this rendition of the idea doesn't look all that great to me. Is this similar to what we'll see from LG and Samsung? [Update: More details from internal email] Essential reportedly cancels second phone, puts itself up for sale

According to Bloomberg , Essential, an up-and-coming phone manufacturer, is reportedly calling it quits, canceling its second phone and putting out a "For Sale" sign. The company, founded by Android's creator Andy Rubin, has supposedly hired an outside firm to advise it on a potential sale, with one suitor allegedly showing interest. The Essential Phone, or the PH-1, was a phone focused on physical beauty, despite the deep notch at the top of the display for the front camera and sensors. Despite its problems, it gained a small but loyal following, many of whom were anxiously waiting for Essential's sophomore phone (PH-2?). Those dreams look to be crushed now, with Rubin's company canceling its second device. Bloomberg 's source claims that the engineers, some of whom came from Apple and Google, will likely be a part of the sale, but Essential is still trying to make a decision.  Bloomberg  also reports that Essential is pivoting to the smart home

alcatel 5V debuts with notched screen, dual rear cameras, 4,000 mAh battery

TCL-owned alcatel has unveiled its newest flagship offering today, the 5V. The phone comes with a 6.2-inch 19:9 notched display with 720x1500 resolution, an 88% screen-to-body ratio, and 2.5D Dragontrail glass on top. The alcatel 5V has a dual 12 MP + 2 MP rear camera system with dual-tone LED flash, with the secondary sensor being used only for depth information, enabling bokeh effects. The main snapper has 1.25μm pixels and 1/2.8" size, and the camera software can do things like AI scene detection, burst shot, HDR, real-time bokeh, and it also contains electronic image stabilization and Google Lens (which tries to identify the things you're pointing the camera at). The selfie shooter is an 8 MP unit with 1.12μm pixels and 1/4" sensor size.
