Huawei Media Pad M5 Lite, a mid-range tablet for the whole family
Despite Huawei's recent struggle to break into the US market, the company isn't ready to call it quits. The company showed up at CES this year with a new Android, suitable for the entire family. The new Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite sports a 10.1-inch 1920×1200 IPS display with 2.5D glass on the front and an aluminum body. The design isn't much of a departure from recent MediaPad devices, but this new tablet does feature a total of four speakers which are tuned by Harmon Hardon which deliver impressive audio.
On top of that, you also get a 3.5mm headphone jack! The audio output from the speakers is actually quite impressive, giving you an immersive experience when you're sitting back to enjoy a movie or a great game.
With a fingerprint sensor located along the long side of the display, the tablet does look a bit lopsided when held in portrait mode, but at 16.76 oz, it's pretty comfortable to hold and well balanced. In the inside, the MediaPad M5 Lite is powered by a Kirin 659 SoC with 3GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, and a 7500 mAh which is rated for 11 hours of 1080p video playback.
The features which make the Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite stand out from the competition are the included M-Pen lite stylus and the Kid's Corner UI. As you'd expect, the active stylus allows users to write notes or draw on the display, giving you a traditional pen and paper feel. The included Kid's Corner is a secure area for your children, featuring only the apps you want them to use while also including a schedule/timer which allows them to only use it for an allotted time or during certain times throughout the day. The feature ties into the tablet's fingerprint sensor so that Kid's Corner opens automatically when your children unlock the device. Kid's Corner will also keep track of which apps your children use the most so that you can easily monitor how they are spending their time when using the tablet. Out of the box, the tablet will be running Android 8.0 with EMUI 8, but Huawei is planning on updating the software later this year.
The tablet will be coming to the US in Q1 and will sell for $299. That may sound a bit pricey when compared to other mid-range Android tablets, but the Huawei MadiaPad M5 lite's build quality is better than most other devices in the segment and the included M-Pen lite stylus add a lot of value as well.
