LG posts record profits for 2018, mobile division still losing money

LG is doing great – it just announced a record yearly revenue of $54.4 billion and record profit of $2.4 billion, 10% higher than in 2017. The mobile division is weighing it down, however.

LG Mobile had a revenue of $7.08 billion and posted an operating loss of $700 million. The company claims that the division is showing signs of improvement thanks to better control on spending and inefficiencies.

This year LG will rely on operator-driven markets (North America and Korea) for stable sales and will push 5G phones and devices with "different form factors" to try and go back in the black.

LG Home Entertainment posted a record profit of $1.35 billion. It will lean on its premium OLED TVs and large 4K TVs to increase revenue and profits.

LG Home Appliance also posted a record profit of $1.35 billion and was LG's strongest performing unit in 2018.

The LG Vehicle Components Company took in $1.24 billion, the highest in the division's history. This is attributed to the high demand for infotainment hardware and a strong performance of ZKW. LG acquired 70% of ZKW's shares in 2017 for €1.1B, the largest acquisition in the Korean company's history.

Google Maps tests directions screen with refreshed Material Design, rolls out For You tab to 130 countries

With every few updates, Google Maps seems to walk closer and closer to a full-fledged refresh of its Material interface, helping it go along with the new direction Google is taking this year with its app design language. We've seen a new look for the main interface , an updated side menu , overhauled hotel listings , new fonts in many places throughout the app, a persistent Overview/Reviews/Photos bar on some place listings, and even an update to the look of the app on Android Auto . But over the past couple of days, one more part of the app is getting its re-looking session: Directions. For the longest time now, Google Maps has had a blue background behind the from/to directions boxes. The new UI switches that to more white, with dark grey text and icons, and some blue accents for the selected mode of transportation and starting step-by-step guidance. Samsung Galaxy J2 Core manual shows a customized Android Go phone

Samsung's first Android Go phone – the Galaxy J2 Core – has been making the rounds and causing some confusion. We saw the quad-core CPU of the Exynos 7570 benchmarked and we have some idea about the geographic distribution of its variants. Perhaps its manual can clear some things out. Here's some good news – the back is removable and you can change the battery. Here's some bad news – the USB port looks like a microUSB. The phone is a dual SIM handset with old-school slots, there are no card trays here (and you need to remove the battery to change the SIMs). There's a microSD card slots stacked on top of one of the SIM slots. The big questions was "how much will Samsung customize Android Go?" And the answer seems to be "plenty". The manual doesn't name the Android version, but it shows how to use Galaxy Apps and Smart Switch. Even the homescreen has the usual Samsung looks.
