JBL Flip 5 speaker gets power-focused upgrades for 2019

At CES 2019 JBL revealed their latest update to their line of portable Bluetooth speakers. The fifth generation of the devices will be called the JBL Flip 5 and consumers should see these units adorning retail shelves this spring. The Flip 5 is slightly larger than last year's Flip 4 so that JBL engineers could accommodate some new hardware being packed into the units.

Outside of the size, one exterior change that is noticeable is JBL's decision to switch to a USB-C port for charging purposes. This expands the options available for JBL to incorporate quick charging technology into the units so that users can top off the batteries in a shorter amount of time. Speaking of the battery, it has been enlarged a bit to a 4,800 mAh unit that JBL says is capable of providing 12 hours of playtime. JBL also says bass performance has been improved.

The Flip 5 continues to include IPX7 water resistance of previous generations meaning the speaker can be fully submersed in water. A built-in microphone is also included so the unit can function as a speakerphone.

Retail pricing is expected to start at $100.
