Even Energizer Has A Foldable Phone At MWC 2019

Many of the foldable phones coming out of the woodwork for 2019 have two small displays that combine to form a single tablet-sized one, but Energizer bucks that trend by having a mammoth 6-incher on the front of its device, along with an 8.1-inch tablet screen on the inside. This phone's hinge is built around a single folding screen, which means that the slightly smaller phone screen gets relegated to the device's backside when the tablet folds out. One of the most shocking things about this phone is that it will only cost 850 euros, the equivalent of less than $1,000 USD.

Naturally, because it's an Energizer phone, it's got a massive 10,000mAh battery. Between the two large screens, the beefy Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, and the phone's out-of-the-box 5G capabilities, you're probably going to end up being quite thankful for that battery. The six-inch screen is a 2,160 by 1,440 affair, and the tablet screen runs a roughly equivalent full HD+ resolution in a somewhat unique 4:3 form factor.

Other specs include 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage with expandability via a MicroSD card, and three cameras. On the front of the device where the six-inch screen resides, you'll find a 24-megapixel selfie snapper. On the "back" of the device, facing out toward the world no matter what mode it's in, there is a 48-megapixel sensor in a dual setup with a 12-megapixel unit.

While the relatively low price, top-notch specs and 5G capabilities make the device a good choice on paper, the design is a bit on the questionable side. The key aim here was clearly to jam a tablet screen in there, and some compromises were made. For starters, the front screen has bezels that recall the flagships of 2017 and on back, and makes no effort to follow the ultrawide trend. On top of that, the hinge is located on the left when the device is in single-screen mode, and it's not just ugly to look at, it's also thick and unwieldy. Naturally, people who typically use their phone in their left hand will have a harder time with the device because of that.

For all of its flaws, Energizer's upcoming foldable device is unique enough to get excited about. Compared to its previous devices, this one is a huge deviation and a massive leap forward. Energizer is no stranger to devices that have huge batteries and tend to keep going and going, just like the consumer batteries that the brand is known for, but most of them thus far have been mostly boring otherwise. There have been a few exceptions, of course, and the company's MWC 2019 lineup definitely contains a number of new concepts for the company.

Energizer is planning to launch this foldable phone in a lot of the same territories where similar devices are available, or will be available, from other companies. The thing that's going to set this one apart is price. While it is expensive in an objective sense, it's the cheapest true foldable yet, and that's going to be a major selling point with this nascent tech. Flagship specs, 5G, and foldability at a price that puts competitors to shame warrants a second glance, no matter what the device may look like.
