Google Assistant adds support for smart heaters, air fresheners, and fireplaces

Google Assistant makes it really easy to interact with smart home devices, but Google is still working to bring that functionality to everything on the market. Recently, Google Assistant quietly added support for heaters, air fresheners, and even connected fireplaces.

As noted by the folks over at Android Police, Google now officially supports Assistant integration for connected heaters, air fresheners, and fireplaces. Admittedly, these probably aren't the first products you think of when it comes to a smart home, but they are out there. For example, this 500W electric heater claims to support Google Home. "iFlame" also offers smart control over your home's fireplace, and QuikThings makes a smart air freshener that works with Alexa.

These new categories all work in slightly different ways too. Air Fresheners, for example, can be toggled on and off and users can also ask Assistant to adjust modes and toggles on these devices. Fireplaces work in a similar way.

Heaters, on the other hand, can be treated a bit differently. Google says that they are "similar to thermostats," but cooling may not be supported and temperature targets might not work either. Thus, Google will let its partners adjust how these devices are treated by voice commands.

Heaters are similar to thermostats but do not support cooling and may not support setting temperature targets. Heaters may rely on modes, toggles, and fan speed settings.

Sony Announces Smaller Digital Paper E-Ink Writing Tablet

Sony has now announced a smaller follow-up to last year's Digital Paper E-ink writing tablet, the DPT-RP1. That's according to a new announcement made today via Sony's official blog. The new tablet – also dubbed with Digital Paper branding but sold under the model number DPT-CP1 – seems to be the same basic design as the previous model. However, while that earlier device was sized as close as possible to A4 paper with a 13.3-inch display, the new model drops to A5 with a 10.3-inch display. That should make its use much easier under a wider number of circumstances since it will arguably be easier to hold in one hand while writing with the other.  However, there will certainly be other benefits as well. Samsung to build a P3 ‘total semiconductor factory’ in Pyeongtaek by 2021

It hasn't been long since Samsung completed the construction of its P2 semiconductor plant in Pyeongtaek, but now, the company is preparing to build its 3rd 'P3' semiconductor factory in the same city in the Gyeonggi Province. According to reports from the local media , Samsung wants to start constructing the P3 plant in September and make it fully operational by the end of 2021. The P3 plant will reportedly be 300 meters longer than the existing P2 plant, topping a total of 700 meters in length. Constructing the building itself should take roughly a year, and a few additional months will be needed to install the necessary equipment and ready it for mass production.
