Samsung misses the podium in Global Data’s 5G RAN evaluation

Market research firm Global Data has placed Samsung Electronics on 4th place in its recent 5G radio access network (RAN) evaluation. According to Business Korea citing Global Data, Samsung got a score of 3 out of 5 in the Installation Ease and Technology Evolution categories, and a 4 out of 5 in both Baseband Unit Capacity and Radio Unit Portfolio.

Samsung scored a total of 14 out of 20 points in Global Data's 5G RAN evaluation, and placed 4th. The company was outperformed by Huawei, who got first place with maximum points in all four categories. The second and third places went to Nokia and Ericsson who've scored 16 and 15 points, respectively. ZTE scored the same amount of points as Samsung did but fell on the 5th place. As a result, Huawei got a 'Leader' designation while the other companies have received a 'Very Strong' grade.

Last month we've discussed how 2020 might be a decisive year for Samsung's 5G network business, and how Huawei remains a threat in many emerging markets despite the US-China trade war. Nevertheless, Samsung is strengthening its position in key markets including the USA, where the company has recently acquired TeleWorld Solutions to deliver end-to-end support solutions as demand increases. Samsung also entered the Canadian 5G market in a partnership with Videotron late last year

Google Pixel 3 Teardown: Adhesive secures battery, different OLED panel

The Google Pixel 3 XL Teardown by iFixit we featured yesterday revealed the bigger variant offers a whole lot of glue and is a bit challenging to disassemble and repair. We were surprised by the AMOLED screen as it was made by Samsung–one of its biggest rivals. The smartphone isn't exactly our top choice right now but the premium flagship has potential. It has a smaller variant, the standard Pixel 3, that comes without a notch and obviously wide forehead and chin. The Pixel 3 teardown shouldn't be any different from the Google Pixel 3 XL teardown but iFixit was curious if the display is the same. The team opened the new Pixel and discovered the panel is from LG. That's an interesting fact because last year, the Pixel 2 XL had used a display from LG while the vanilla Pixel 2 screen was from Samsung. On supported devices , they combine the utility of Android apps with the flexibility of an adaptive (and productive) form-factor. The latest tweak, presenting Android-style Settings and Shortcuts apps in the launcher, further affirms the role Google's Chrome OS is set to assume.  It's no secret, we're of the opinion that Chrome OS devices are set to displace Android tablets, and app-centric changes like these seem to imply that Google feels the same way. Samsung and SK Telecom link 4G and 5G networks for the first time

Samsung has teamed up with South Korea’s major mobile carrier SK Telecom to demonstrate the communication between 4G and 5G networks for the first time in the industry. Samsung has said that the demonstration went off without any disruptions and that clear streaming was enabled between the two networks. The two companies were successful in linking the long-term evolution network that uses the 2.6 GHz frequency band with the 5G network that uses the 28 GHz and 3.5 GHz frequency band. This will pave the way for 4G and 5G users to communicate even when there’s no nationwide 5G infrastructure. “Along with the 5G network’s 3.5 GHz frequency band that provides a wider coverage, and the 28 GHz frequency band that enables ultrahigh-speed transmission, the connection with the 4G network will help users enjoy the best communications services anywhere without disruptions,” said SK Telecom.
