Galaxy S8′s AI assistant can process payments, might come in male and female variants

In 2017, Samsung will launch the Galaxy S8 with its own AI assistant that can process payments. Also, new trademark applications point to male and female versions of this voice controlled assistant, named Bixby and Kestra.

A few weeks ago, after the news of Samsung’s acquisition of AI maker Viv Labs, it was discovered that the Galaxy S8 might come with its own artificial intelligence software, possibly called Bixby. Now, we have learned that Samsung is working on the technology to process payments through voice commands. Not coincidentally, this technology is being developed under the name Bixby Pay, confirming the name as well as its payment feature.

Furthermore, the guys over at GalaxyClub have uncovered new, AI-related trademark applications. In both South Korea and the European Union, Samsung has filed the paperwork for the trademark Kestra, as well as several variations of the name Bixby: Bix-bee, Bix:)bee, Bix:)by and Bix-by. All trademarks come with the same descriptions that leave nothing to the imagination, such as ‘Computer software for enabling hands-free use of a mobile phone through voice recognition’ and ‘Computer software used to process voice commands’. Though unconfirmed, Bixby and Kestra could well turn out to be the male and female variants of Samsung’s AI.

Fun detail: the names Bixby and Kestra are directly or indirectly associated with (drumroll, if you will) Star Trek, which makes for a neat connection to, you know, the Galaxy. Or, in this case: the Galaxy S8 and its larger sibling, possibly called Galaxy S8 Plus.

Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. Google Play Points reward program is official, but only in Japan for now

... Earlier this month, Cody discovered evidence for a loyalty program  in a teardown of the Google Play app, and now we're seeing the first official word about it. The rewards scheme is called Play Points and has gone live in Japan, according to a support page for the app. Users can join the program by navigating to the 'Play Points' section in the app's hamburger menu. To begin with, one point will be awarded for every ¥100 (about $0.90) spent on apps and games — to be used on IAPs or converted to Google Play credit — but as you progress, higher levels can be achieved with even greater rewards. Some OnePlus 6Ts have an issue with waves of static on the display

Based on a handful of reports on the OnePlus product forums, some 6T owners have run into a problem with their phone's display in which a pixelated sort of "wave" or pulse of bright colors travels up or down the screen. A reliable trigger can't seem to be found, but for those that are affected, it appears to happen more often on the lock screen while using either OnePlus' face recognition or the in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone.
