Samsung rolls out another Android 7.0 Nougat beta update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge

Samsung is rolling out a new version of the Android 7.0 Nougat beta for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in the UK today, making it the third update to hit the devices in the last three weeks. Samsung seems to be taking customer feedback to heart as it has implemented a few changes to how things worked in the previous Nougat firmware.

For example, the new beta brings the ability for us to choose the layout for the Quick Panel toggles, and you can also put the brightness slider at the top of the toggles and back into the main notification shade. Samsung has removed the Edge feeds feature, although we’re guessing this will come back later on. The new beta also has a few unresolved issues, such as the screen taking time to light up after one wakes up the phone, though Samsung says these issues only affect a small number of users. Naturally, regular stability improvements and bug fixes are also part of the update.

The firmware version of the update is G935FXXU1ZPKK; if you have the Nougat beta installed on your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge, you should see the update hit your device sometime later today. If it doesn’t, simply search for Software update in the settings menu to download it manually (it’s sized at around 300 MB). Don’t forget to let us know about any changes you notice after installing the update!

Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. Google Play Points reward program is official, but only in Japan for now

... Earlier this month, Cody discovered evidence for a loyalty program  in a teardown of the Google Play app, and now we're seeing the first official word about it. The rewards scheme is called Play Points and has gone live in Japan, according to a support page for the app. Users can join the program by navigating to the 'Play Points' section in the app's hamburger menu. To begin with, one point will be awarded for every ¥100 (about $0.90) spent on apps and games — to be used on IAPs or converted to Google Play credit — but as you progress, higher levels can be achieved with even greater rewards. Some OnePlus 6Ts have an issue with waves of static on the display

Based on a handful of reports on the OnePlus product forums, some 6T owners have run into a problem with their phone's display in which a pixelated sort of "wave" or pulse of bright colors travels up or down the screen. A reliable trigger can't seem to be found, but for those that are affected, it appears to happen more often on the lock screen while using either OnePlus' face recognition or the in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone. The issue — which our Cody Toombs aptly described as "like something changed in the Matrix" — is demonstrated in the video below: VIDEO Based on reports, a factory reset can't fix the problem, and it doesn't appear to be tied to any specific SKU.
