Samsung launches the Gear S3 in Canada for $469

After launching the Gear S3 in the United States last week Samsung today announced that its new smartwatch is available for purchase in Canada. Both variants – the Gear S3 classic and the Gear S3 frontier – are now available directly from Samsung Experience Stores, the company’s online store as well as from major retailers across the country.

The Gear S3 brings some great new features such as an integrated GPS and speakers, IP68 water resistance and Samsung Pay. The classic and frontier models basically have the same features aside from some minor design differences and the fact that the latter has support for cellular connectivity. Samsung took inspiration from classic watch design to create a truly modern smartwatch.

Samsung’s new smartwatch has been well received, it sold more than 25,000 units in South Korea within just ten days of launch. The company is now gradually releasing it in additional markets across the globe.

Customers in Canada will have to pay CAD $469 for the Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier each. Both are available for purchase starting today. The Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic will continue to be sold in the country as well for CAD $319 and CAD $369 respectively.

Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. Google Play Points reward program is official, but only in Japan for now

... Earlier this month, Cody discovered evidence for a loyalty program  in a teardown of the Google Play app, and now we're seeing the first official word about it. The rewards scheme is called Play Points and has gone live in Japan, according to a support page for the app. Users can join the program by navigating to the 'Play Points' section in the app's hamburger menu. To begin with, one point will be awarded for every ¥100 (about $0.90) spent on apps and games — to be used on IAPs or converted to Google Play credit — but as you progress, higher levels can be achieved with even greater rewards. Some OnePlus 6Ts have an issue with waves of static on the display

Based on a handful of reports on the OnePlus product forums, some 6T owners have run into a problem with their phone's display in which a pixelated sort of "wave" or pulse of bright colors travels up or down the screen. A reliable trigger can't seem to be found, but for those that are affected, it appears to happen more often on the lock screen while using either OnePlus' face recognition or the in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone. The issue — which our Cody Toombs aptly described as "like something changed in the Matrix" — is demonstrated in the video below: VIDEO Based on reports, a factory reset can't fix the problem, and it doesn't appear to be tied to any specific SKU.
