Samsung granted new flexible display patent focused on display mechanics

Samsung has been awarded patents related to flexible displays for a few years now, but one of the most recent patents put forth an artificial muscle for flexible displays that would allow them to bend without the pressure of a human hand when voltage is applied. A new patent awarded to the Korean giant by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) provides more information on the role of the artificial muscle in flexible displays as well as the build quality of the flexible panel itself.

There are two electrode layers with elastomer film in-between, and Samsung says that the flexible display panel will include the use of plastic, particularly polycarbonate, to achieve greater screen flexibility and heat resistance. Think of this flexible display structure as something along the lines of the company’s 3D Thermoforming process for the Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S7 edge turned up a notch or two.

Many wonder what Samsung will do with flexible displays, but the company doesn’t give any hints in its latest patent. What we can know from the current tech scene is that screens crack and devices break when pressure is applied in unusual ways, and Samsung’s latest patent just may put an end to the current device durability concerns. And, as it’s been said before, Samsung’s flexible display will create the true phone/tablet hybrid and justify the use of the term “phablet” that currently refers to 5-inch and 6-inch smartphones.

Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. Google Play Points reward program is official, but only in Japan for now

... Earlier this month, Cody discovered evidence for a loyalty program  in a teardown of the Google Play app, and now we're seeing the first official word about it. The rewards scheme is called Play Points and has gone live in Japan, according to a support page for the app. Users can join the program by navigating to the 'Play Points' section in the app's hamburger menu. To begin with, one point will be awarded for every ¥100 (about $0.90) spent on apps and games — to be used on IAPs or converted to Google Play credit — but as you progress, higher levels can be achieved with even greater rewards. Some OnePlus 6Ts have an issue with waves of static on the display

Based on a handful of reports on the OnePlus product forums, some 6T owners have run into a problem with their phone's display in which a pixelated sort of "wave" or pulse of bright colors travels up or down the screen. A reliable trigger can't seem to be found, but for those that are affected, it appears to happen more often on the lock screen while using either OnePlus' face recognition or the in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone. The issue — which our Cody Toombs aptly described as "like something changed in the Matrix" — is demonstrated in the video below: VIDEO Based on reports, a factory reset can't fix the problem, and it doesn't appear to be tied to any specific SKU.
