Samsung sending recall notifications to Galaxy Note 4 units running a Galaxy Note 7 ROM

One of the first steps that Samsung took when it decided to recall the Galaxy Note 7 was sending recall notifications to the new flagship. The notifications urged users to power down and stop using their Galaxy Note 7 and take it back to their point of purchase for an exchange or a full refund. Many Galaxy Note 7 owners have since returned the handset but it appears that the company is also sending out the same notifications to other Note flagships that just happen to be flashed with a Galaxy Note 7 ROM.

A Reddit user has shared a screenshot of the notification he received on his three-year-old Galaxy Note 4. It calls on him to backup the device’s data, power down and “surrender your Galaxy Note7 unit.”

This didn’t happen because there’s something wrong with the Galaxy Note 4, it received this notification because it’s actually flashed with a Galaxy Note 7 ROM. Flashing refers to the act of replacing a handset’s firmware with another version manually. This is something that enthusiasts normally do and in this particular case it involves changing the build.prop name to the Galaxy Note 7 in order to spoof the systems.

Now that recall notifications are being sent to outdated devices running the Galaxy Note 7′s software this goes to show that Samsung’s systems are unable to distinguish between the two. It’s not ideal for Samsung since it’s apparently unable to properly identify legitimate Galaxy Note 7 units that are still being used from outdated handsets masquerading as the ill-fated flagship.

Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. Google Play Points reward program is official, but only in Japan for now

... Earlier this month, Cody discovered evidence for a loyalty program  in a teardown of the Google Play app, and now we're seeing the first official word about it. The rewards scheme is called Play Points and has gone live in Japan, according to a support page for the app. Users can join the program by navigating to the 'Play Points' section in the app's hamburger menu. To begin with, one point will be awarded for every ¥100 (about $0.90) spent on apps and games — to be used on IAPs or converted to Google Play credit — but as you progress, higher levels can be achieved with even greater rewards. Some OnePlus 6Ts have an issue with waves of static on the display

Based on a handful of reports on the OnePlus product forums, some 6T owners have run into a problem with their phone's display in which a pixelated sort of "wave" or pulse of bright colors travels up or down the screen. A reliable trigger can't seem to be found, but for those that are affected, it appears to happen more often on the lock screen while using either OnePlus' face recognition or the in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone.
