YouTube Kids is giving parents more control over what their kids watch including restricting access to curated, human reviewed channels and videos

YouTube Kids is a great idea in theory, but over the past year we've seen reasons why it's not a good idea to leave your kids to be entertained by videos picked by an algorithm. Rumours of a hand-curated YouTube Kids app surfaced earlier this month, and now Google and YouTube have announced more controls for parents to restrict what videos and channels their kids are watching, including limiting them to hand-curated content.

There's three main options that Google and YouTube are introducing for parents, starting with new collections by trusted partners. These new collections from YouTube Kids partners including Sesame Workshop and PBS KIDS will be curated channels and videos on subjects including arts & crafts, music, sports, learning, and more. YouTube says that they will be adding more partners over time, so we may hear more about local Australian content down the track.

YouTube will also allowing parents to individually approve channels and videos for their kids to view. It may be labourious, but with this new feature you'll be able to lock down what the kids are watching to only what you have pre-approved. This feature will be going live later this year, so watch out for this one.

Finally, improved 'search-off' controls. YouTube has said that once implemented, when you turn off search kids will only be limited to channels that have been expressly verified by the YouTube Kids team.

Instagram starts showing activity status in direct messages

... In its quest to become the only app where you share photos, moments, and messages, Instagram is adding one new feature to its direct messages: activity status. Just like you'd see when a person was last active on WhatsApp or Telegram or plenty of other messaging services, now you can do the same on Instagram and chide them for not replying with "oohs" and "aahs" to the preettay pic of a sunset that you just posted or the kissy face you messaged directly to them. Android has changed tremendously in the last ten years. Returning to modern hardware after our historical series , I was struck by the visual differences across versions. LG G7 ThinQ to Have Boombox-Like Sound, Feature DTS:X Immersive Audio

In typical LG fashion, we're learning more about the upcoming G7 ThinQ via official channels, even though we're 2 days away from an unveiling in NYC. This is fine with us, so long as we get a better understanding of what to expect later this week. Yesterday, LG detailed all of the different audio aspects of the device. For those who cry for dual stereo speakers, that doesn't appear to be the case on the G7 ThinQ. Instead, LG is utilizing a single speaker, but incorporating a design that's essentially an echo chamber. In LG's writeup, they call it a " Boombox speaker ," but what's actually happening is a bit more interesting.
