Samsung SDI expands presence in Europe with new battery plant in Hungary

In an effort to expand the presence of Samsung SDI in Europe, Samsung has finished turning a former production line for plasma display panels in Hungary into a battery plant for electric vehicles.

According to The Korea Herald, Samsung SDI plans to use the plant in Hungary as “a base to cater to the growing demand for electric vehicles [in the region], and produce a synergy effect with its plants in Xian, China, and Ulsan in Korea.”

At a completion ceremony held on Monday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban publicly thanked Samsung for investing in Goed, the city where the plant is located, and assured the firm that the government is supportive of its business.

“For the first time, the state-of-the-art technology of Samsung SDI will be applied to batteries to be made in this plant in Hungary,” said Jun Young-hyun, head of Samsung SDI. “Batteries are one of the most important parts supplied to global car makers.

“I expect the plant to contribute to the growth of the European electric vehicle market.”

Samsung to build a P3 ‘total semiconductor factory’ in Pyeongtaek by 2021

It hasn't been long since Samsung completed the construction of its P2 semiconductor plant in Pyeongtaek, but now, the company is preparing to build its 3rd 'P3' semiconductor factory in the same city in the Gyeonggi Province. According to reports from the local media , Samsung wants to start constructing the P3 plant in September and make it fully operational by the end of 2021. The P3 plant will reportedly be 300 meters longer than the existing P2 plant, topping a total of 700 meters in length. Constructing the building itself should take roughly a year, and a few additional months will be needed to install the necessary equipment and ready it for mass production. Sony Announces Smaller Digital Paper E-Ink Writing Tablet

Sony has now announced a smaller follow-up to last year's Digital Paper E-ink writing tablet, the DPT-RP1. That's according to a new announcement made today via Sony's official blog. The new tablet – also dubbed with Digital Paper branding but sold under the model number DPT-CP1 – seems to be the same basic design as the previous model. However, while that earlier device was sized as close as possible to A4 paper with a 13.3-inch display, the new model drops to A5 with a 10.3-inch display. That should make its use much easier under a wider number of circumstances since it will arguably be easier to hold in one hand while writing with the other.  However, there will certainly be other benefits as well.
