Samsung has filed a number of bezel-less smartphone patents, but don’t get too excited

Samsung has filed a number of design patents with the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service. The sketches included in the documentation would lead you to believe that the company’s toying with a number of different designs for the Galaxy S9—but all is not as it seems.

The patents are actually for a number of different ways to house the antenna on both the full-screen smartphones Samsung is reportedly working on and traditional bezelled units. There are, of course, more filings than will ever materialise—and that’s because the firm is exploring all its options.

Goodbye, notch

For that reason, we’re unable to deduce anything from these patents about the design of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S9. All we know is that it’s working on a slew of different ways to integrate the antenna and sensor into the frame, without having to introduce an iPhone X-esque notch.

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are rumored to sport a 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch Infinity Display, respectively, a Snapdragon 845 processor and a pressure-sensitive Home button. They should both ship running Android 8.0 Oreo skinned with a new version of Samsung’s Experience user interface.

Samsung to build a P3 ‘total semiconductor factory’ in Pyeongtaek by 2021

It hasn't been long since Samsung completed the construction of its P2 semiconductor plant in Pyeongtaek, but now, the company is preparing to build its 3rd 'P3' semiconductor factory in the same city in the Gyeonggi Province. According to reports from the local media , Samsung wants to start constructing the P3 plant in September and make it fully operational by the end of 2021. The P3 plant will reportedly be 300 meters longer than the existing P2 plant, topping a total of 700 meters in length. Constructing the building itself should take roughly a year, and a few additional months will be needed to install the necessary equipment and ready it for mass production. Sony Announces Smaller Digital Paper E-Ink Writing Tablet

Sony has now announced a smaller follow-up to last year's Digital Paper E-ink writing tablet, the DPT-RP1. That's according to a new announcement made today via Sony's official blog. The new tablet – also dubbed with Digital Paper branding but sold under the model number DPT-CP1 – seems to be the same basic design as the previous model. However, while that earlier device was sized as close as possible to A4 paper with a 13.3-inch display, the new model drops to A5 with a 10.3-inch display. That should make its use much easier under a wider number of circumstances since it will arguably be easier to hold in one hand while writing with the other.  However, there will certainly be other benefits as well.
