Samsung is getting serious about artificial intelligence

Samsung has already started dropping hints that artificial intelligence might be front and center on its upcoming flagship smartphone. The company is actually getting quite serious about artificial intelligence. Samsung confirmed today that it’s creating a new research center for advancing AI technology.

The company hasn’t said where this artificial intelligence research center will be located. However, it did confirm that it’s going to be a joint research facility under the mobile and consumer electronics divisions. Those are two of the three main divisions of Samsung Electronics.

The new artificial intelligence research center is going to be led by HS Kim, the chief of the company’s consumer electronics division. Young Sohn, Samsung’s chief strategy officer, will get a “strengthened” role to find new business areas for all business groups.

It’s pertinent to mention here that Sohn was the one who led Samsung’s $8 billion acquisition of Harman International last year.

Like big data, artificial intelligence is a key avenue of future growth that Samsung appears to be keen on exploring. It has also been investing in hardware companies that have experience developing co-processors for AI. Some reports suggest that the Galaxy S9 might actually feature a separate chip for AI functions.

Sony Announces Smaller Digital Paper E-Ink Writing Tablet

Sony has now announced a smaller follow-up to last year's Digital Paper E-ink writing tablet, the DPT-RP1. That's according to a new announcement made today via Sony's official blog. The new tablet – also dubbed with Digital Paper branding but sold under the model number DPT-CP1 – seems to be the same basic design as the previous model. However, while that earlier device was sized as close as possible to A4 paper with a 13.3-inch display, the new model drops to A5 with a 10.3-inch display. That should make its use much easier under a wider number of circumstances since it will arguably be easier to hold in one hand while writing with the other.  However, there will certainly be other benefits as well. Samsung to build a P3 ‘total semiconductor factory’ in Pyeongtaek by 2021

It hasn't been long since Samsung completed the construction of its P2 semiconductor plant in Pyeongtaek, but now, the company is preparing to build its 3rd 'P3' semiconductor factory in the same city in the Gyeonggi Province. According to reports from the local media , Samsung wants to start constructing the P3 plant in September and make it fully operational by the end of 2021. The P3 plant will reportedly be 300 meters longer than the existing P2 plant, topping a total of 700 meters in length. Constructing the building itself should take roughly a year, and a few additional months will be needed to install the necessary equipment and ready it for mass production. Samsung says upcoming Galaxy M handsets will be better and cheaper

The Galaxy M series has proven to be very successful for Samsung. The company launched its Galaxy M handsets last year in a bid to compete more effectively against the likes of Xiaomi and Vivo in India's lucrative mid-range market.
