Google Photos for Android reorganizes the bottom bar to prioritize main tab & view

In addition to rolling out a more advanced movie editor this morning, Google Photos is also introducing a minor reorganization to the bottom bar today. The backup service is interestingly prioritizing the app's main view at the expense of Assistant.

When the Android app switched to a bottom bar, Google Photos for Android placed the main "Photos" tab with the chronological image timeline at center. With the introduction of the "Sharing" functionality at last year's Google I/O, that symmetry was gone. The app always opened to Photos, but it was awkwardly the second highlighted tab.

First spotted several weeks ago by us as a likely A/B test and now widely rolling out this afternoon, the "Assistant" tab is no longer the first one from the left. Rather the app's main view leads, followed by "Albums," and then Assistant. Sharing remains its last place position at the right.

This is a very minor tweak, but it now matches the Google Photos client on the web, which was recently revamped. Visually, it is a more logical hierarchy to arrange the tabs in and only serves as a minor demotion to the smart assistant feature.

If you are not yet seeing this change, try closing the app and removing it from multitasking to see the change load. It is so far, live on all devices we've checked on.

DJI showcased its new Mavic Air drone in New York. The third quadcopter in this series is of similar quality to its predecessors and can also fold its arms for better portability. For its size, no competitor offers so much in terms of photo quality. Samsung spent a lot of money to tell New York that the Galaxy S8 has arrived

It goes without saying that Samsung is going to spend a lot of money on marketing to get the word out that its new flagship smartphone is the one you should be buying this year. Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ at an event in New York City today. Since it was an invite-only event, although it was streamed live online, Samsung decided to spend a lot of money to tell New Yorkers that the Galaxy S8 has arrived. Samsung illuminated the iconic Times Square in New York City with immersive displays reflective of the visual experience that the Galaxy S8′s Infinity Display promises. It basically bought out almost every available signage to announce the arrival of its newest flagship smartphone.
