Samsung shares the “secrets” to its Galaxy S9’s AR emojis

While ordinary emojis are fun, it's time for them to level up already. And the new flagship devices from Samsung are the first ones out that door with their augmented reality emojis which are basically "intelligent and personalized" versions of those fun things that you send friends in lieu of words. Now the OEM is sharing the tech that they used to allow you to send those AR emojis. Well, you could if you have the Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+.

The problem that their team needed to solve is that emojis are already too common and simple. They wanted to give their users an even more fun experience with emojis and so they created the next best thing to actually sending yourself and your best expressions over to your friend (yes there's video chat, but where's the fun in that?). Leveraging the advanced cameras of the two new flagships, the idea is to take a selfie and then turn it into a custom avatar that can track your actual facial expressions.

Using facial recognition technology and using a data-based machine learning technology, it produced a 3D rendering of your selfie. The camera then analyzes the 2D image and using its deep learning database, it will re-create your facial features. And then to make it even more life-like, it uses Face Tracking Technology which has more than 100 facial features to "capture individual emotions on the spot." Lastly, Blend Shape Technology, from the name itself, blends expressions together based on 75 facial expressions.

They conducted 100 tests on a weekly basis to ensure that all of this works and the result is the AR emojis that you can now create on your Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+. It currently has 18 different expressions which will expand to 54 gradually and you can use them as GIFs, videos, or PNG files. Have you tried them yet? How has your experience been? Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. Samsung Display retains its leadership It's pertinent to mention here that Samsung's Q1 market share is 6.6 percentage points lower than it was in the same period last year. ARCore apps are now available for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in China

Google's ARCore apps can now run on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in China. The apps are available in the Xiaomi App Store through a partnership with Google. A tweet from the Google AR & VR Twitter account announced the news today, although the exact ARCore apps that are now compatible with the Mi Mix 2S were not named. Google did say in the tweet that more partners for ARCore are coming soon. The Mi Mix 2S is the first phone from the manufacturer to support ARCore. Some OnePlus 6Ts have an issue with waves of static on the display

Based on a handful of reports on the OnePlus product forums, some 6T owners have run into a problem with their phone's display in which a pixelated sort of "wave" or pulse of bright colors travels up or down the screen. A reliable trigger can't seem to be found, but for those that are affected, it appears to happen more often on the lock screen while using either OnePlus' face recognition or the in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone.
