Acer’s Chromebook 13 line starts at $650 and arrives in September

  • Acer has finally announced the pricing and availability for its new Chromebook 13 line first shown off in May.
  • The Chromebook 13 series includes a model with a traditional laptop form-factor and one with a swiveling hinge.
  • Pricing starts at $650 and goes up to $950 depending on the internal specs. Units should be available in September.

Back in May, Acer showed off two new Chromebooks: the Chromebook 13 and Chromebook Spin 13. Both machines looked poised to take on the Google Pixelbook with premium internals and a 13.5-inch, 2256 x 1504 IPS display with a 3:2 aspect ratio. Three months later, Acer has now announced the price and availability details for the devices (via The Verge).

The Acer Chromebook 13, which features a traditional clamshell form-factor, starts at $650. An Intel Core i3 CPU powers this laptop and it includes 8GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. Customers can upgrade to a model with an Intel Core i5 for an additional $100.

The Chromebook Spin 13, which comes with a touchscreen and a 360-degree hinge, starts at $749.99. This basic configuration houses an Intel Core i3 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 64GB of built-in storage.

Additionally, the Spin 13 comes with a stylus that docks into the base of the Chromebook. It uses Wacom's EMR active pen technology, a custom solution that aims to deliver "a digital pen experience that feels as intuitive and natural as writing, drawing, or signing on paper," says Wacom.

The top-of-the-line model costs $949.99 and gets bumped up to the Intel Core i5 CPU. This variant also gets its RAM and storage doubled to 16GB and 128GB.

Both Chromebooks also come with a Corning Gorilla Glass trackpad, two USB-C ports, a single USB-A 3.0 port, and a microSD card slot. The computers feature an aluminum chassis that keeps the machines lightweight and sturdy.

Customers will be able to purchase either Chromebook 13 variant from Acer starting in September. With Google rumored to release a second-generation Pixelbook in the same timeframe, it will be interesting to see how the two Chromebooks compare.

Apple has decided to postpone new features in iOS in favor of improving the reliability and performance of the operating system, as according to a report by Axios. According to the report, Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President, Software Engineering, announced the revised plan to employees at a meeting earlier this month. This pushes features like refresh of the homescreen and in-car user interface, improvements to core apps like Mail and camera experience to 2019. Google’s December 2018 security patch includes much-needed RAM management fix

Every first Monday of the month, we're used to seeing Google launch security patches for its supported devices. This month is no different, as Google has released the December 2018 security patch. The patch not only fixes a bunch of security bugs, but also features the long awaited memory performance fixes. Android Pie has long been killing apps in the background (even if you were using them a second ago) and it's even affected devices other than Pixel /Nexus devices and we hope this fix will help. There are also some camera fixes for Pixel users included as well. Surprisingly, we're seeing the updates hit the Nexus 5X and 6P, both of which have reached their end of life. It's good to see Google support these old devices even when their three years are up and the company has no obligation to update them. December's software release is here.
