Alcatel’s 8-inch Android Go tablet will launch in Australia for less than $130
The Android tablet space has begun to look a little stale, but there may be a renewed interest in affordable but performant Android tablets with Android Go making the jump from phones to tablets. Alcatel seems to agree with that with the announcement of their first Android Oreo (Go edition) tablet, the Alcatel 3T 8.
Alcatel is going after the family-friendly market with this device, combining an affordable price tag, a slimmed down Android Go experience and a stunning 4,800mAh battery.
Other specs include 4G LTE, 8″ display, 12.7 GB of user-accessible storage (so we're guessing 16GB total) and all weighing in at just 279 grams.
We're currently chasing other details, but it's a safe bet that the 3T 8 will have something in the vicinity of 1GB of RAM on board – that's Android Go's focus.
Being an Android Go device, it will come with the standard complement of Go apps including Google Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go and most importantly YouTube Go that allows downloading of videos for offline playback without a YouTube Premium subscription (road trip!). The 3T 8 will also come with Google Lens to harness the power of AI for image recognition.
Alcatel has also baked in some kid-focused features including parental controls, usage times and an eye care mode. There's also an optional bumper case designed for slippery little fingers, making this an excellent family tablet.
The Alcatel 3T 8 will retail in Australia starting soon, with a retail price of less than $130 AUD. It will come in Metallic Black or Suede Blue finishes. At this price and perhaps being the first Android Go table for sale in Australia, I think I'm just going to go out and get one of these just to try it out.
We will be seeking out the 3T 8 on the show floor and we will bring you more datils as they come to light.
