Foxtel launches new 4K Channel and iQ4 set-top box

Foxtel has today announced a 4K channel, the first in Australia, and a new iQ4 set-top box through which you'll be able to receive their content.

The 4K Channel – channel 444 – will launch for Foxtel satellite customers with a Foxtel Platinum HD or Foxtel Sports HD subscription in October.

Foxtel will play live sport including limited NRL and Cricket matches like the Australia v. South Africa, Cricket ODI playing on November 4th in 4K, as well as documentaries, concerts and more in glorious Ultra High Definition (UHD). Foxtel is also looking to expand content on their 4K channel over the next 12 months.

Patrick Delany, Foxtel CEO, said,

Today's news is just the first step into a 4K future – this incredible experience will continue to expand as we bring even more sport and entertainment programming to life in guaranteed 4K, making the most of today's ultra-modern 4K TVs. It's TV like never before.

Foxtel said that the iQ4 will also deliver 'a host of other linear channels, alongside a massive library of TV and movies to stream On Demand via the internet'.

At this stage there's no mention of streaming the 4K content through to mobile devices, it's purely through Satellite connections.

Instagram starts showing activity status in direct messages

... In its quest to become the only app where you share photos, moments, and messages, Instagram is adding one new feature to its direct messages: activity status. Just like you'd see when a person was last active on WhatsApp or Telegram or plenty of other messaging services, now you can do the same on Instagram and chide them for not replying with "oohs" and "aahs" to the preettay pic of a sunset that you just posted or the kissy face you messaged directly to them. Android has changed tremendously in the last ten years. Returning to modern hardware after our historical series , I was struck by the visual differences across versions. For a closer look, we rolled back to an even earlier build on our T-Mobile G1/HTC Dream. For anyone who might be curious, here's a quick visual exploration of Android 1.0 vs. Android 9 Pie. LG G7 ThinQ to Have Boombox-Like Sound, Feature DTS:X Immersive Audio

In typical LG fashion, we're learning more about the upcoming G7 ThinQ via official channels, even though we're 2 days away from an unveiling in NYC. This is fine with us, so long as we get a better understanding of what to expect later this week. Yesterday, LG detailed all of the different audio aspects of the device. For those who cry for dual stereo speakers, that doesn't appear to be the case on the G7 ThinQ. Instead, LG is utilizing a single speaker, but incorporating a design that's essentially an echo chamber. In LG's writeup, they call it a " Boombox speaker ," but what's actually happening is a bit more interesting.
