Google is working on a fix for fast charging issues with Pixel and Pixel XL after Android 9 update


Android 9.0 Pie launched to devices recently, but it looks like the software update has caused some headaches for some owners of the original Pixel and Pixel XL.

As first reported by Android Police, there have been a growing number of reports that the 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL are no longer fast charging after being updated to Android Pie. In those cases, the problem appears to be tied to certain third-party charging plugs that don't support USB Power Delivery, and therefore not charging the handsets as quickly as they were prior to the Pie upgrade.

Google is aware of the situation, as reported by The Verge. The company notes that the bundled charger with both handsets does support USB PD and therefore the fast charging issues shouldn't be present for folks who use the stock charger.

Here's Google's statement:

"We're aware of an issue where non-Power Delivery (PD) USB-C chargers no longer rapidly charge the 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL after the upgrade to Android 9 Pie," a Google spokesperson told The Verge by email. "The 18W rapid charger included in-box is a PD charger and does not exhibit this behavior. We are verifying a fix for non-PD USB-C chargers and will roll it out in the coming weeks."

It's worth noting that the majority of cases for this particular issue centered around the Pixel XL, but Google has confirmed the issue is plaguing Pixel owners, too. The company is currently working on that software fix, and as long as everything goes smoothly, it should arrive "in the coming weeks".
